In Switzerland, the production of wine is distributed over six regions.

Let’s dive a little into each of the regions and discover what makes them unqiue.

Valais – home of Pinot Noir

  • Location: Southern Switzerland.
  • Overview: The Valais wine region boasts 55 grape varieties and 390 producers. Of the total 4,655 hectares, 59% are dedicated to red wine and 41% to white wine. This region is renowned for its indigenous grape varieties such as Petite Arvine, Humagne Blanche, Amigne, and Rèze for white wines, and Cornalin and Humagne Rouge for red wines.
  • Grape Varieties: Pinot Noir (28%), Chasselas (16%), Gamay (10%), Silvaner (7%), Petite Arvine (5%) & Others (33%)
  • Climate: The microclimate, enhanced by robust and warm foehn winds, specifically benefits the ripening process of late-maturing grape varieties in the area. Additionally, it facilitates vineyard cultivation at significantly higher elevations compared to other parts of the country, exemplified by locations like Visperterminen.
  • Notable Producers: Domaine du Mont d’Or SA / Domaine La Rodeline / Cave Marie-Thérèse Chappaz
  • My secret tip: Explore the vineyard trails of Leuk-Susten on a 3-hour hike. Stop at multiple wineries to taste exquisite wines or book a guided tour with friends.

  • Grape Varieties: Chasselas (60%), Pinot Noir (12%), Gamay (9%), Gamaret (4%), Garanoir (3%), Others (12%)
  • Climate: The Geneva Lake acts as a climate regulator and reflects sunlight. Steep slopes and varying sun exposure lead to foehn winds. The soils of this diverse region are similarly diverse, fragmented, and varied.

  • My secret tip: Check out the family run Domaine La Colombe for a wine tasting stop!

German Switzerland – home of Pinot Noir & Müller-Thurgau

  • Grape Varieties: Pinot Noir (52%), Müller-Thurgau (15%), Sauvignon Blanc (3%), Chardonnay (3%), Others (26%)

  • Notable Producers: Weingut Jauslin / Schlossgut Bachtobel / Domaine Donatsch
  • My secret tip: Embark on a scenic hike from Fläsch to Chur in the Canton of Grisons, a journey spanning approximately 7 hours. Along the way, take the opportunity to pause at charming vineyards for a leisurely lunch or to savor a few glasses of fine wine.

Geneva – home of Chasselas & Gamay
