The Queen of the Mountains

The queen of the mountains – you may have read these words in brochures or advertisements for Swiss tourism. Yet, do you know where the “queen”  is? Let me give you a little hint below:

Enjoy breathtaking views sweeping over the Swiss Plateau, the alps and the majestic Vierwaldstättersee. You may have guessed it – Mount Rigi is the queen of the mountains. The magnificent view from the Kulm certainly lives up to the name.

Whether you decide to go throughout the day or night,  the view never disappoints:

If you plan to visit the queen of the mountains, I recommend you make it an overnight trip. The alpine dairy farm Chäserenholz, a traditional alpine hut surrounded by meadows and forests, is worth a stop. Are you a cheese fanatic? Even better! Whether you choose a conventional “Käseschnitte” fondue or an excellent meat & cheese platter – this alpine hut will pamper you with alpine cheese and other delicacies. It offers comfortable bedrooms, perfect for families, couples or individuals. The best part of the overnight stay? You will be treated to a substantial farmer’s breakfast, filled with homemade specialities.

Seebodenalp – Rigi Kulm – Chäserenholz – Seebodenalp

This is one of many hiking routes that leads you to the Queen of the Mountains. From the Seebodenalp, you hike over farm roads and meadows. A challenging ascent then continues through a shady mountain forest. You will enjoy a breathtaking panoramic view over central Switzerland throughout this ascent. Once you reach the Rigi Staffel station of the cog railway, you have nearly reached your destination. It is only a brisk 20-minute walk to the Rigi Kulm from this point on. The Chäserenholz hut, with its cosy alpine dining room and excellent cheese, can be reached from Rigi Kulm in an easy walk that takes about 20 minutes.

Fact O’Clock:

  • Queen Victoria was carried to the peak Rigi Kulm in a sedan chair
  • The Vitznau-Rigi Railway went down in history as the first mountain railway in Europe
  • It is a true paradise for hikers, with over 100 km of hiking paths
