Myth Busting: Indian Cuisine is not just Curry

For many, Indian cuisine tends to be grouped all into one category: curry. Contrary to popular belief, there are a lot more complexities and characteristics about Indian food, making it more than just curry (and so good!). From daal (lentil soup) to biryani, and sabzi (vegetable mix) to raita (yoghurt mix), there is a wide array of dishes and flavors to try out.

Butter Chicken Curry Indian Food

Curry powder is essentially a mix of various spices including chili powder, turmeric, coriander, cumin, ginger, and pepper. In Indian cuisine, there is, however, no such thing as “curry powder” that is used to spice a dish. There are possibly over 50 different spice blends that are used to flavor a particular dish, most commonly being garam masala.

Indian Spices

The most common association of Indian food that I tend to get asked about is tandoori chicken and butter chicken. If you look beyond those two overhyped dishes, there is a lot more flavor waiting for you. Each part of India has its own style of cooking. The south is a lot more coconut milk-based, while the north uses a lot more butter and ghee.

Today I have got a recipe for one of my all-time favorite dishes: Palak Paneer. This is Indian cottage cheese (=paneer) cooked with a blended mixture of ground spices and spinach (=palak). This is really easy to make, and requires less than 30 minutes of prep and cook time.
