Packing-Hack for Drastic Temperature Changes in a Single Destination

What to pack for a trip to a region with extreme temperature changes

Packing for a vacation is not always as easy as it sounds. If you need help, this travel blog is the right place for you to find some inspiration on what to put in your suitcase.

Layers are key:

In two weeks, I’ll be heading off to Ecuador. We will start in Quito, which is 3000 meters above sealevel and temperature sinks below 10 degrees celsius at night. After that we go explore the Amazon, which is extermely humid and hot –  so we gotta be prepared for rain as well as sun. After that we go further into the mountains where temperatures are even lower than in Quito. In the end, we visit the Galapagos islands. There, the sun will be out with up to 30 degrees and there won’t be any rain – instead we’ll go swimming in the sea.

The funny thing about all that is that we travel only with carry-on baggage. So how will I survive the cold as well as the warm? Let me show you my packing-hack for such a situation:

To sum up – The following 10 things will be in my suitcase:

  1. Comfy shoes with good grip
  2. Warm woolen socks (you can always take these off)
  3. Comfortable underwear (such as a sports bra)
  4. Fleece leggins
  5. Short pants to change (as soon as the sun is out)
  6. A short-sleeved shirt
  7. Fleece jacket
  8. Down gilet (pocketable)
  9. Rain parka (pocketable)
  10. Beanie

Layers will literally save my life when in Ecuador. If I bring a small backpack to wherever I go, I can just squeeze unneccessary layers in there. Whenever I get cold again, I am surely equipped and do not need to suffer. Pocketable clothing is enormously practical because it only takes up very little space – I got my down gilet as well as the pocketable parka from Uniqlo, in case you’re wondering.

How do you manage to stay warm as well as cool during such situations? I’m always happy to hear other experiences and learn more in order to make any trip perfect!
