Five brothers

Born in utopia

Grew to manhood

Became magnificent individuals

Paradise did not suffice

They left the realm of oneness

One by one

Were prone to crave

Could not understand

Off they went, adventurers, bold

The eldest brother

Born to strength

Grew to size

Became a warrior

Inheritance did not suffice

Marched to conquer the universe

He dreamt big

Was bound to fail

Soon he died

Not in battle, he starved

The second brother

Born to wisdom

Grew inbound

Became a monk

The calm did not suffice

Swam to the bottom of the oceans

Aimed at dharma

Caused karmic swings

He meant to drown in divine perfection

The bubble popped underway, restart

The middle brother

Born to mindfulness

Grew to inspire

Escaped all cravings

Had all and more in abundance

Physically bound, a mind afloat

Never left utopia

Never really arrived

When old age unfollowed his body

No memoirs were written, nowhere

The fourth brother

Adopted from strangers

Grew to fierceness

Became a merchant

No goods could ever suffice

Ever grinding, striving for ever more

Ever moving, ever richer

Nothing to be found

He left on a stroke

Nothing stayed, naked

The youngest brother

Born to shrewdness

Grew to effectiveness

Became an advisor

No master’s savvy could ever suffice

Living up to any challenge

Wanting to outdo them all

Made his sponsors inquisition

He was burned on a cross

The phoenix was not reborn

Five brothers

Died scattered

Left this world

Left untold legends

Paradise did not suffice

They chose aloneness

Set to discover

What cannot be found

Could not understand

Off they went, imploded, gone
