Welcome back to my travel blog series dedicated to exploring Switzerland economically through its efficient public transport system, primarily utilizing SBB services, thanks to various travel passes such as the Swiss Friend Pass for those under 25, the Swiss Travel Pass, or the GA Travelcard (https://www.sbb.ch/en).
I always advise starting your excursions early to make the most of your day and have ample time to visit and engage in all activities.
Fifth Trip: Lugano – Valle Verzasca – Locarno
Today’s excursion takes us to the Italian Swiss region, and I recommend embarking on this journey during spring, summer, or autumn. If the temperature is suitable, you might even have the chance to take a dip in one of Switzerland’s most extraordinary locations.
I suggest beginning our excursion by visiting Lugano, a charming city where you can stroll through the historic old town, steeped in rich history. Start with a visit to the cathedral, just a 3-minute walk from the station, before enjoying a leisurely walk along the stunning lake, surrounded by mountains.
As a curiosity, the mountain known as San Salvatore has a legend attached to it. It’s said that Jesus, on his ascension to heaven, made a stop at the summit of San Salvatore. If you opt for a longer visit to Lugano, I recommend hiking to the summit from Paradiso. However, considering the significant elevation gain of 600 meters, it’s easier to take the funicular. Make sure to catch the incredible sunset views.
Continuing our day trip, you can easily spend 3 hours exploring Lugano, enjoying its charm and perhaps indulging in an aperitif with views of the lake, reminiscent of Lake Como in Italy. Remember, though, that restaurant prices here remain Swiss.
After exploring Lugano, head back to the station to catch a train to Valle Verzasca. First, take a train to Tenero (approximately 25 minutes), then catch a bus to Lavertezzo Ai Poss, our first stop (30 minutes). Be prepared for some winding roads as we venture into the mountains, so I recommend sitting on the left side of the bus.
Visiting this river stream directly from the glacier, with its waterfalls, is truly incredible. There’s a restaurant nearby, but you can also bring your own food to enjoy amidst nature. You can continue walking along the road for 20 minutes or catch the same bus and alight at a stop further ahead, where you’ll find a famous Roman bridge in Valle Verzasca.
Here, you can swim in the river and for the adventurous, even jump from the rocks. Please note that swimming here is at your own risk as there are no lifeguards. The water’s unique color and refreshing temperature, originating from the glacier, make it an unforgettable experience.
After enjoying this wonderful spot, catch the bus back to the station and board a train to Locarno (20 minutes). As the days are longer in spring, summer, and autumn, I recommend buying an ice cream upon arrival in Locarno and strolling along the lakeside promenade, enjoying the breathtaking views that will remind you of Lugano. If the weather permits, you’ll witness a magnificent sunset.

Switzerland has a lot to visit, so I recommend staying for at least 5 days to a week. You’ll be enamored by the country’s nature and places 🙂
