Here are some of the highlights from my friends’ answers:

1. What would make you consider buying preowned luxury items compared to buying brand new luxury items?

Both friends stated that the concept of giving preowned luxury items a second life was a compelling reason to buy them. One felt that it would be a waste to throw away clothing that was still in good condition, while the other appreciated the price savings, the uniqueness of vintage/ discontinued items, and the sustainability aspect of giving an item a second life.

2. Do you think there are any drawbacks to buying preowned luxury items, such as concerns about authenticity or wear and tear?

There was consensus amongst the respondents that there are drawbacks to buying preowned luxury items. One cited concerns about authenticity and wear and recommended buying from reputable sources that offer authenticity verification. The other friend touched on the social constraints and emotional factors, such as the desire to demonstrate purchasing power and maintain social status, as possible disadvantages to purchasing preowned luxury items.

3. How do you determine the value of a preowned luxury item when considering to purchase it, and what factors do you consider?

Both interviewees mentioned comparing prices and researching the market value of preowned luxury items as key factors in determining their value. One also pointed out the brand, condition, rarity, and desirability of the item as additional important factors.

4. What advice would you give to someone who is considering buying preowned luxury items for the first time?

They emphasized the importance of researching the item and the seller, checking for authenticity, and being wary of risks when buying preowned luxury items for the first time. Furthermore, one friend insisted to trust one’s gut feeling, while the other recommended checking whether the seller is a private seller or an official store with a department for preowned luxury items.

5. Do you have any favourite websites and/or stores where you like to shop for preowned luxury fashion items?

One of the respondents named Vestiaire Collective and Farfetch as her favorite websites for shopping preowned luxury fashion. In particular, she appreciated and referred to the high-quality photos, the transparency of the sellers with regard to condition and price of the items, and the return policy. The second respondent, on the other hand, has not bought preowned luxury items before and did not have any favorite websites or stores to recommend.
