Self-Discipline or Motivation?

This blog post is part of a series of blogs for an assignment at my university. The goal of this blog is to highlight different ways to escape inertia and improve the way we think. Believe it or not, there is a lot more energy and willingness in you and you often convince yourself otherwise. A day can become delirious because of your thoughts, but it depends on your own actions to replace this insatiable inner influence.

A brief introduction to the world of self-discipline, presented through the eyes of a young adult who sets multiple goals and follows their process with great dedication

The following video briefly demonstrates this person’s beliefs and inner enthusiasm to improve not only his own quality of life but also the quality of life of those around him. Similar to my previous posts, the goal of these blogs is to address that everyone can actively work on their own self-discipline and self-improvement. It is not about not having or finding the energy to work out, read a book, travel, or meet up with friends, but about how individuals choose to spend the majority of their time.

In today’s society, people are called to work strict hours and under pressure, face the consequences of a pandemic, and struggle with great competition in many fields. However, merely accepting and going along with this situation will lead to stable results and passivity. On their way, they will have many opportunities to experience new things and be motivated. However, even if it sounds weird, motivation can be the main factor in social passivity and procrastination. This is because motivation tempts you to work only when you want to. Consequently, many people put off working until they experience the next storm of enthusiasm.

Similarly, Max considers self-discipline as the main tool for improvement and motivation as a part of it.

The interviewee of this post is a young adult who has chosen to divide his time wisely between his studies, career goals, fitness, and actively participating in his own willpower. He is completing his PhD in Biophysics and among his favorite things to do are rowing, playing rugby, run, and travel. With his unique approach to exercise, Max demonstrates an ongoing passion for fitness.

Motivation can be the main factor in social passivity and procrastination. This is because motivation tempts you to work only when you want to. Consequently, many people put off working until they experience the next storm of enthusiasm. Similarly, Max considers self-discipline as the main tool for improvement and motivation as a part of it. As he says:

“Motivation is necessary, but if it comes without discipline, it doesn’t help you much”

Max has written several booklets on nutrition and his studies are based on functional anatomy. He tries to improve the physical condition of many people by focusing on imparting knowledge and then practicing. According to his structural thinking, it is better for someone to decide on a smaller goal to achieve. After that, it is easier to decide on a slightly higher goal.

Surely the results in any field, be it work, study, or sport, remain the same if someone repeats the same thing over and over again. Through sports, Max was taught that he could improve his performance by recording the results after practice and focusing on making a change. To change the final result, the inner elements should be changed, otherwise, the result is already visible with or without their contribution.

What can be highlighted from this conversation is his quote about change:

“The change will come with the results, if you want the change to happen then you have to work for it”.

My name is Katerina Ustalli and I come from Greece and Albania. I have studied Media and Communication in Athens and before two years I decided to move in Switzerland. My aim was to attend some German classes and limit my stay in Switzerland to six months, however, the city of Zurich fascinated me and I have already ended up in this city for two years. I love sports and I enjoy being active in social media. I try to combine my passion for fitness with social media and I want to create my own online platform. This goal would be easier with a Master in Online Marketing!
