Complacency: the danger in the comfort zone

Have you ever heard of complacency?

It takes some time for us to find the most important potentials. A vast majority stay in this state because they assume it is safe and always brings results. We need consistency as a period that is important to rethink in our diligent actions and replan the future steps. But when that consistency becomes the main option, it is replaced by complacency.
Everyone spends half of their day at their job, which they spend most of their waking hours doing. For this reason, each of us should not waste too much time doing something we don’t enjoy. Since time is limited, we must make the most of it by doing activities that give us meaning and pleasure.

Indifference is just a hindrance to creativity and a way to prevent future glory. Imagine doing the same thing every day, undoubtedly we will improve your knowledge and skills in this task, but over time this stability will cause us to proceed automatically, limit critical thinking and lose vision.

All of this theory can be illustrated with some real facts. In many jobs, people stop striving for the best, they don’t focus on any innovation, they do the same thing over and over again without chasing new opportunities. For example, working in the same position for a long period of time can be fascinating but also scary. Interacting with people, improving social skills, not much overthinking, contributing the same and trying less, and a friendly environment to boot. I have not mentioned all these things to encourage people to remain stable in the same job. I mentioned them as an obstacle to future advancement. For a period of time, anyone can work in that field, but when someone becomes stable in it, they should just try to get better at what they do and get out of their comfort zone.

There are jobs that are not to be underestimated, but people tend to underachieve in certain areas and leave certain positions unchanged and without a future. For example, the job of a waiter can offer a lot of knowledge and advancement, someone can learn different techniques to communicate with people, can upgrade their position in their team, improve their leadership skills or establish a whole philosophy around the dining room or raise money and start their own business. However, many of us see this position as a mechanical serving routine, we may focus on the tips and the salary and not at all on the opportunities behind these tasks.

Complacency about certain jobs requires action and discipline. Competence differs from complacency in that the former refers to regular training and progress and the latter refers to a crisis of dissatisfaction. There is no need for someone to look for a new job, but simply to appreciate each day in that job, to improve one’s environment, and to maintain one’s intention to seize new opportunities.

My name is Katerina Ustalli and I come from Greece and Albania. I have studied Media and Communication in Athens and before two years I decided to move in Switzerland. My aim was to attend some German classes and limit my stay in Switzerland to six months, however, the city of Zurich fascinated me and I have already ended up in this city for two years. I love sports and I enjoy being active in social media. I try to combine my passion for fitness with social media and I want to create my own online platform. This goal would be easier with a Master in Online Marketing!
