Wine Tourism Destinations

I am aware that at the moment planning holidays, it does not make sense at all. But daydream a little bit does not hurt anybody. As everybody has their own personal reason why to travel (or not travel) one most of us can agree is to try new things. This includes personal experiences, adventures, food, and wine is industry also wants a part of that cake.

The wine industry benefits from this greatly, it has helped them to increase their on-site sales, build their brand and increase the relationship with their customers. Enotourism (another new word) generates a revenue of millions of Euros to many countries in Europe and around the world.

Here are some destinations to be considered in your next holidays:

Valle del Douro, Portugal

This area claims to be the most beautiful wine region in the world. I went on a road trip across Portugal a few months ago, and it is definitely a place to check out. The magnificent mountains and terraced vineyards that rise above the Duero River.

Puglia, Italy

Holidays in Italy plus wine… there is no way to get that wrong. So no big surprise including a region from our neighbor country. The unique architecture, the exquisite regional cuisine, beautiful beaches, and historical attractions and culture create an irresistible mix.

Rioja, Spain

Traveling to Spain is way more than tapas and siestas. With its stunning scenery, great food, and brilliant wines. This providence is situated in the northeast of the country along the Ebro River, protected to the north by the Cantabrian Mountains, it is the proud owner of its own demoninacion de origen. It gives Spain some of the best and most popular wines.

Valle De Guadalupe, Mexico

I personally visited this region in my so far only wine tasting trip. It was truly amazing. Valle de Guadalupe is closer to Los Angeles than Napa Valley. The Valle has been overshadowed by America’s West Coast wine destinations, but Mexico’s wine region is now getting international attention for the world-class bottles produced by its 100-plus wineries. The quality winemaking is matched with the food and multi-course tasting.

New South Wales, Australia

Going all the way down under just to try their wines sounds like an expensive date, but if you are in the region enjoying the nature, sightseeing kangaroos, adding this experience sounds like a good plan. This wine region is only a couple hours’ drive from Sydney and well connected by a network of buses. The history of the region of the Hunter Valley is very rich with a great location for wine tourism, endless open spaces and sweeping views to relax the mind, and, not to mention, some of the best wines in the world.

There are many more places to go, not only in these countries but many others including Switzerland. I am definitely going to consider one to do some wine tourism next time I go on holiday, the places are nice with a lot of nature around, it gives a nice break from the city and is away from all the typical sightseeing.

*Fun Fact

When at a wine tasting event, it is not frowned upon for spitting the wine out. Take a sip of wine and hold it in your mouth for a couple seconds, then either swallow it or spit. This is an acceptable wat to know if it is a food wine. A good wine will have a lengthy aftertaste.

  1. Thank you for the inspiration. I have been to Valle del Douro in Portugal as well and this region is so beautiful, not just because of the wine.
