Now, it’s time to bring the comforting, soul-warming empanada to your kitchen.
Why empanadas? 🤔
Empanadas are a cornerstone of Argentine cuisine, with regional variations from Salta to Patagonia. They’re often served at family gatherings, picnics, and festivals. What makes them special is the blend of simple ingredients and bold flavors, all wrapped in a tender dough that crisps to perfection.
Ingredients you’ll need: 📝
For the dough:
- 3 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter (cold, cut into cubes)
- 1 egg
- 3/4 cup cold water
For the filling (classic beef version):
- 1 lb ground beef 🐄
- 1 large onion, finely chopped
- 1 red bell pepper, chopped
- 1 can of tomatoes, chopped
- 2 tbsp olive oil
- 1 tsp paprika
- 1/2 tsp cumin
- 1/2 tsp chili powder (optional)
- Salt and pepper to taste
Instructions: 👩🍳
1. Make the Dough In a large bowl, mix the flour and salt. Cut in the butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Add the egg and water gradually, mixing until a soft dough forms. Knead lightly, wrap in plastic, and refrigerate for 30 minutes.
2. Prepare the Filling Heat olive oil in a skillet over medium heat. Sauté onions until translucent, then add the chopped red bell pepper and ground beef. Cook until browned. Stir in the chopped tomatoes, paprika, cumin, chili powder, salt, and pepper. Remove from heat and let it cool.
3. Assemble the Empanadas Roll out the dough and cut into circles (about 4-5 inches). Place a spoonful of filling in the center, fold over to make a half-moon, and crimp the edges with a fork or do the traditional repulgue twist.
4. Bake or Fry Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Brush empanadas with a beaten egg for a golden crust. Bake for 20-25 minutes until golden. Alternatively, fry them in oil until crisp. 🔥🥟
