Ciao, ragazze/ ragazzi ??

Looking to get away from it all without going too far? What if I told you that just 3 hours from Lucerne, you could discover a veritable little corner of Italy? Welcome to Ticino, that often overlooked yet enchanting region of Switzerland.??

Nestled in the south of the country, Ticino is the gateway to dolce farniente and relaxation for many Swiss, eager to escape if only for a weekend. It’s a real piece of Italy on Helvetian territory, where the Italian language resonates and the Mediterranean atmosphere envelops you from the moment you arrive. ?

After spending time in Ticino last year for both work and leisure, I’m excited to share with you three must-visit cities: Lugano, Ascona, and Locarno. Alongside uncovering their unique charms, I’ll equip you with essential travel insights, including seamless transport options from Lucerne and a curated list of must-experience activities. Long story short – this blog is your ultimate guide to exploring Lugano, Ascona, and Locarno in style. Andiamo!??

Planning your trip to Ticino

Best travel times ?

Ticino is a destination worth visiting throughout the year, yet the ideal time for your visit depends on your personal preferences.

In spring and summer, you can enjoy the pleasant Mediterranean climate and water sports activities on the lake. In autumn, mild temperatures and colorful autumn landscapes invite you to go on hikes and exploration tours.?

It’s a good idea to book your accommodations and activities in advance, especially during busy times like the Locarno Film Festival, usually held in early August.?

Transportation options and costs

Although you can easily reach Ticino by car, the train connections from Lucerne are also excellent. Here you will find information on train connections from Lucerne to Ascona, Locarno and Lugano, including trip durations and one-way ticket prices with and without a Half-Fare (Halbtax Abonnement in ) travelcard:

Destination Trip duration Price for one-way ticket (half-fare) Price for one-way ticket (normal)

Accommodation recommendations ?

In each of the three destinations, you will find a variety of accommodations to suit your taste and budget.

During my stay in Locarno, I spent the night at the Hôtel Millennium and can highly recommend it. This charming little hotel is close to the city center and offers an ideal location with restaurants and bars within walking distance. The train station is also nearby (5min walk) and parking is available for those traveling by car.

The rooms are small but air-conditioned, which is a plus, especially over the summer! Many rooms also offer a wonderful view of the lake. The management and reception staff are extremely friendly and accommodating, which made my stay particularly enjoyable. ??
