A Goaltender Fairy Tale

Imagine going to a hockey game as a spectator – and suddenly you have to play in the best hockey league in the world. That’s the story of Scott Foster, 36, accountant & NHL legend.

A goalie’s dream

Scott Foster lives a normal life as we know it. He is 36 years old, lives in Oak Park, Illinois, and works as an accountant. Almost exactly one year ago, on March 29, 2018, Foster’s life was turned upside down for a short time as his dream of an NHL career came true.

The incredible story took place during the Chicago Blackhawks game against the Winnipeg Jets. Anton Forsberg, the Blackhawks’ goalie, was already injured during the warm-up and was unable to play the game at all. Chicago must therefore rely on their backup goalie, Collin Delia, who also had his NHL debut this day. But this is not enough. The Blackhawks needed one more goalie to be around, just in case. Shortly before the faceoff, the Blackhawks tweeted that they had signed Scott Foster as the team’s emergency backup goalie. Fun fact: Foster has never played hockey on pro level. He only plays hockey in an amateur league in his spare time.

Save by Foster

14 minutes before the end of the game the unthinkable happened and the fairy tale took its course. Collin Delia, the backup goalie, got injured and could not continue playing due to cramping. Scott Foster had to take over for the rest of the match! An amateur goalie has to play in the world’s best hockey league.

As he took the ice, Blackhawks coach Joel Quenneville was grinning and the fans in the stadium began to chant Fosters name. With almost 14 minutes to play, Foster had to defend the Blackhawk’s 6-2 lead. And how he did it. He stopped all shots and did not allow a single goal against him. Pretty good for an amateur goalie. The audience in the United Center celebrated every save Foster made. When the game was over, the 36-year-old just laughed at his teammates, who almost ran him over to congratulate him. To top it off, Foster was voted the best player of the game. A story only hockey can write.

Hockey only as a hobby

More than a decade ago, the Canadian played at the University of Western Michigan (2002 to 2006). In his active time, he achieved a .875 save percentage. Since then he has been working as an accountant and only plays hockey as a hobby – apart from the 14 minutes and 1 second in the best league in the world.
