Drink it! It will always be my top answer about what to do with wine. But when the Monday evening’s bottle goes bad by Friday, you do not need to pour it down the sink. There are many other things you can do with it. Here are some five ideas of what to do, it can help you in your daily life, or to reduce waste and be more sustainable.
1. Fertilizer
Wine is not just for humans; plants love it, too! A little bit of wine can help turn your compost into fertilizer. If you want to show up your green-thumb, sprinkle the leftover wine on the compost bin to create your very own fertilizer. Red wine activates bacteria in compost that transforms it from trash into highly effective fertilizer, but make sure you balance it out with some dry materials.
2. Skin Rejuvenation
The fermented grapes contain powerful anti-aging properties that fight wrinkles, treat sun damage, improving the skin. Add a glass of red wine to your next soak in the tub (of course, not counting the glass you drink on your hand) or splash it on your face for a quick skin-firming mask.
3. Meat marinade
Not only does red wine make steak extra-flavorful, but it may also reduce cancer-causing compounds naturally found in meats. Frying and grilling meat at high temperatures turns sugars and amino acids of muscle tissue into carcinogenic compounds but marinating steak in red wine for at least six hours before cooking can reduce two types of carcinogens by up to 90 percent.
4. Clean windows
Old white wine has a similar make-up to vinegar, which has long been used to etch out smears and streaks on windows and glass, so keep the vinegar in the kitchen and use a splash of unwanted white wine for a streak-free finish on glass instead.
5. Heal bruises
The richness of flavonoids in wine can help relieve inflamed body tissue. Try treating bumps and bruises with a cotton pad soaked in red wine to soothe the skin.
And as there are many other alternatives to use wine, especially when it comes to cooking, but also even to improve your health, the main reason to open a bottle of wine should be to have a nice time with a great company.
If you’ve found another alternative way to use wine, please educate me in a comment.
Haha what a fun insight 🙂 I rather drink the wine but I still like your ideas.
