Let’s be real – eating healthy sounds simple… until you’re stuck at the airport with only vending machines, halfway through a busy day without a packed lunch, or tempted by pastries at a client meeting.
Staying energized and focused while you’re on the move doesn’t mean you need a perfect meal plan or hours of prep. It just takes a little strategy and a few go-to habits that work in real life.
Here are my favorite ways to keep nutrition in check when the schedule is tight, the options are limited, and you still want to feel good.
1. Think in terms of “Balance, not perfection”
Perfection is stressful – and often unrealistic. Instead, aim for balance:
✔ A source of protein
✔ Some fiber (veggies, whole grains, fruit)
✔ A bit of healthy fat
This trio will keep your blood sugar stable, your mind focused, and your hunger in check for hours.
2. Plan smart swaps for office lunches
If you’re buying lunch or eating out, go for upgrades instead of overhauls:
-
Swap white bread for whole grain
-
Ask for dressing on the side
-
Choose grilled over fried
-
Add a side salad or veggies where possible
-
Skip sugary drinks and opt for water, tea, or sparkling water
Even small changes can make a big difference in how you feel through the afternoon.
3. Pack light snacks when traveling
Traveling? Keep emergency snacks in your bag. These are my go-tos:
-
Mixed nuts or almonds
-
Protein bar (look for low sugar + short ingredient list)
-
Whole grain crackers or rice cakes
-
Apple or banana
-
Hummus or nut butter in travel packs
Having a snack on hand can save you from hangry choices later.
4. Stay hydrated (and watch the caffeine creep)
We often confuse thirst with hunger – especially when we’re rushing. Bring a refillable water bottle, drink regularly, and try to limit back-to-back coffees.
Hydration supports digestion, energy, and focus, and it’s one of the easiest wins.
5. Grab-and-go doesn’t have to mean junk
Whether you’re in a grocery store, train station, or coffee shop, here are some surprisingly good options to grab on the fly:
-
Pre-packed salads with protein (chicken, tuna, eggs)
-
Greek yogurt or Skyr
-
Boiled eggs
-
Veggie snack packs
-
Sushi trays
-
Soups (watch the salt!)
-
Overnight oats or muesli
Keep your eyes open — healthy options exist, even in unexpected places.
6. Prep one reliable thing ahead – like protein bagels
If you only have time to prep one thing, make it something versatile, filling, and easy to grab.
Lately, I’ve been loving these 3-ingredient protein bagels — they’re soft, macro-friendly, and travel really well.
🥯 Easy Protein Bagels (makes 4)
Ingredients:
-
150g Greek yogurt or Skyr
-
120g self-rising flour (or regular flour + baking powder + pinch of salt)
-
1 egg
-
30g grated cheese
Instructions:
-
Preheat oven to 180°C (350°F).
-
Mix all the ingredients into a dough, knead briefly.
-
Shape into 4 mini bagels.
-
Optional: Brush with egg and add toppings (sesame seeds).
-
Bake for 20–25 minutes. Cool and store in an airtight container.
How I use them:
✔ With hummus & cucumbers
✔ Filled with tuna or egg salad
✔ As a side with soup or salad
✔ Toasted with almond/ peanut butter for a quick breakfast
These bagels are game changers – especially when you want a homemade option that doesn’t feel like “diet food.”
Final tip: build a simple packing habit
If you’re someone who’s often on the go, consider keeping a “go bag” with basic essentials:
- Travel spoon/fork
- Small container or reusable pouch
- Water bottle
- A few snacks in rotation
A 5-minute prep the night before can make a huge difference the next day – and help you feel nourished, not just full.
