Today’s Recipe

A staple in Middle Eastern and North African cuisine, shakshuka is a one-pan dish made with eggs poached in a spiced tomato and pepper sauce. It’s hearty, healthy, and incredibly easy to make.

Ingredients & Price

  • 2 bell peppers: 1.00 CHF
  • 1 onion: 0.25 CHF
  • 2 cloves garlic: 0.10 CHF
  • 3 tomatoes or canned tomato sauce: 0.80
  • CHF2-3 eggs: 1.20 CHF
  • Olive oil (1 tbsp): 0.25 CHF
  • Spices (salt, pepper, cumin): 0.10 CHF
  • Fresh coriander: 0.30 CHF

Total = 4.80 CHF

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Start by dicing the onion, slicing the bell peppers (after removing the seeds), and mincing the garlic. If you have coriander, chop a bit and set it aside.
  2. In a pan, heat a bit of olive oil and sauté the onion, garlic, and peppers together until softened and lightly golden. Season with salt, pepper, and cumin.
  3. Add the tomatoes or sauce and let everything simmer on medium heat for about 10 minutes, until the mixture thickens. Stir in the coriander and a touch more olive oil if you like.
  4. Using a spoon, make little wells in the sauce and crack your eggs into them. Cover and let cook on medium for 8–10 minutes, until the egg whites are set but yolks still soft.
