Welcome back to my second blog â Hiking the Hidden Stories of Switzerland. This time I followed a trail thatâs at the heart of Swiss identity â a place where a simple oath turned into the beginning of a country.
RĂźtli isnât dramatic at first glance. But walk it slowly, and it quietly becomes one of the most powerful places youâll ever visit.
đşď¸ A Legend That Started It All
In 1291, people of Uri, Schwyz, and Unterwalden met here at RĂźtli. Under a period in which their lands were threatened by and under the control of the Habsburg Empire, they took an oath to stand together, fight for their freedom, and remain as one. That powerful moment â now known as the RĂźtli Oath â is what is considered to be the beginning of what became Switzerland one day.
Perhaps the most famous story of this time is William Tell. Not only is he recalled as a good marksman, but also as a symbol of courage and defying tyrants. While his story may be a legend, it’s become deeply ingrained in the Swiss identity and national fight for independence.

𼞠My Experience Walking Through It
I started my journey in Brunnen, taking a calm ferry ride across Lake Lucerne. The water was still, the mountains were reflected like a mirror â it already felt like something special was about to begin.
I got off the boat at Treib, where the hike starts. The trail slowly climbs through forests and small paths. Birds were singing, the air smelled like spring, and everything felt peaceful.
After some time, I reached RĂźtli â the most important part of the hike for me.
Itâs a quiet, simple meadow with a flag and a small plaque⌠but standing there felt powerful. Itâs where the story of Switzerland began, and somehow, you can feel that. The silence is not empty â it feels full of meaning. I stood there for a while, just breathing it in.
From RĂźtli, the path led me down to Bauen, a peaceful lakeside village, and then finally to Isleten, where I finished the hike â tired but really happy and calm.
đ Climb: 621 meters up
đ Descent: 705 meters down
đ Time needed: Around 4 hours and 10 minutes
𼞠Trail type: Medium difficulty â not too hard, but youâll feel the effort!
âď¸ Reflections and Moments That Stayed With Me
While walking along the trail, I met a few new people. We talked, shared smiles, and for a moment, we were all part of the same journey. Nature has a way of connecting strangers.
I was amazed by the beauty around me â the mountains, the lake, the trees. Everything felt calm but powerful. At one point, I saw a dog on the path. I stopped, gave it a little cuddle, and it made me smile.
As I stood in RĂźtli, I started thinking about the history â the people who came here long ago to fight for freedom. The view was peaceful, but in my mind, I could feel the weight of the past. This place is more than just nature. Itâs a memory of courage and unity.
đŽ Tips for Experiencing the Same Atmosphere
đś Take the ferry from Brunnen
Itâs not just transportation â it slows you down, and it feels symbolic.
đż Visit in spring
Everythingâs blooming, the trail is alive, and the quiet beauty of the season matches the mood of the place.
đ Read a bit about the RĂźtli Oath before you go
Even a short summary will give the meadow more meaning when you stand in it.
đˇ Bring a camera â but take breaks from it too
Capture the moments, but donât rush. This isnât a hike to âcompleteâ. Itâs a place to feel.
đ The Most Memorable Spot on the Trail
This moment stopped me.
While I was walking the trail, I reached this viewpoint â and I had to pause. The view was so wide, so peaceful, and so powerful at the same time. The lake below, the beauty of the mountains, the bright spring sky⌠it felt like nature was showing its best side.
I took this photo because I wanted to remember how I felt standing there. Later, I found out something that made it even more special:
This exact view is shown inside the Swiss Parliament.
That made me smile. It means this place is not just beautiful â it means something to a whole country. Itâs a symbol of Switzerland. And in that moment, standing quietly above Lake Lucerne, I felt connected to that meaning.
Itâs not just about the landscape. Itâs about what it stands for â peace, freedom, strength, and something timeless. Thatâs what I felt while looking out. And Iâll carry that feeling with me.
đŁ Final Thoughts
Sometimes, the most powerful places arenât loud â theyâre quiet. RĂźtli doesnât shout for your attention. It lets you arrive, walk slowly, and take something real with you when you leave.
This wasnât the most difficult hike Iâve done. But it was one of the most meaningful.
