Part of the “Healthy Hustle: Guide to Thriving, Not Just Surviving – Inspired by WHO Guidelines” Series
It was 3 PM, and I was on my third coffee – still foggy, still hungry. I had skipped lunch again. That’s when I realized: my brain doesn’t run on caffeine alone. When you’re busy chasing deadlines, nutrition often takes a backseat. However, what you eat and drink directly impacts your cognitive function, energy levels, and overall performance.
Why It Matters
According to the World Health Organization (WHO):
“A healthy diet helps protect against malnutrition in all its forms, as well as noncommunicable diseases (NCDs), including diabetes, heart disease, stroke, and cancer.”
→ WHO Healthy Diet Factsheet
“Dehydration can negatively affect mood, attention, and memory.”
→ WHO Guidelines on Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene
What You Can Do
No meal prep? No time? No problem. Here are simple upgrades for your daily routine:
1. Morning Start:
Start your day with a glass of water before that first coffee – it kickstarts hydration and focus. Drinking coffee immediately upon waking can interfere with your body’s cortisol production, which follows your circadian rhythm. Delaying coffee intake to mid-morning allows cortisol levels to naturally decline, optimizing caffeine’s benefits.

2. Smart Desk Snacks:
Keep unsalted nuts, oat crackers, and dried fruit within reach to avoid sugar crashes.
3. The Infused Trick:
Use a large reusable water bottle at the office to ensure water is always accessible. Adding lemon, mint, or cucumber not only enhances flavor but also encourages increased consumption. Proper hydration has been linked to healthier aging and a reduced risk of chronic diseases.

4. Balanced Meals:
Aim for a simple combo: protein + fiber-rich carbs + healthy fats. A wrap or bowl will do.
5. Break the Caffeine Cycle:
Feeling foggy? Reach for water first. it might do more than that fourth espresso ever could.

Much need it!😁
Right? We’ve all been there 🙂. Glad it resonated!
My favourite daily snack is chocolate.. probably not the healthiest but 100% delicious 😍
That’s totally relatable 🙂. I enjoy chocolate from time to time too – mixing it with some healthy snacks usually does the trick for me. That way, it feels like my brain and soul both get what they love. And sometimes it’s just impossible to avoid chocolate – like on this particular weekend. Happy Easter!
Hey Lukas, I know caffeine isn’t really good for me, but I still haven’t quite managed to quit it 😅 What does help me stay balanced, though, is making sure I drink enough water. A nice water bottle or a pretty glass actually makes a difference! I bought an AirUp bottle a while ago and honestly, I wouldn’t want to be without it anymore. 🤝🏼 And for snacks, I usually grab a protein bar. But when I’ve got a little more time, I love slicing up an apple, adding some nut butter, and topping it with nuts or even cacao nibs – such a tasty combo! 🍎🥜🍫 That said, I’m not gonna lie – sometimes I still reach for gummy bears or chips… Everything in balance, right? 🤭
Hey Saara, thanks for sharing your routine 🙂. Sounds like you’ve really found a smart balance. Love the AirUp idea and will give it a try as well. That apple-nut butter combo sounds next level. And yes, I totally agree … it’s all about balance.
Hi Lukas, luckily, I don’t like coffee, so I don’t have that burden 😉 But I love to snack sweets 🫣🍬🍫 Best is to not have any at home or to replace them with something which you mentioned!
Hi Géraldine, no coffee and still energy? Respect. And yes, I feel you on the sweets. Replacing them made a huge difference for me 🙂.
