Leaving your hometown and stepping into a new world of studies, jobs, and responsibilities is exciting; but let’s be honest, it can also be overwhelming. Between tight deadlines and unfamiliar routines, motivation sometimes runs low. So let’s ask a powerful question:
What truly recharges your batteries?
What Waters Your Plant?
Each of us has an inner plant; a metaphor for our energy, well-being, and drive. And like any living thing, it needs care and attention.
For some, it’s music. For others, it’s long walks, painting, deep talks, or journaling. These small rituals become our daily nutrients.
“You don’t wait for motivation to act. You act to find your motivation.”
– James Clear
What Is Your “Why”?
In the business of life, we sometimes forget why we chose this path. Why do we pack our bags, say goodbye to the familiar, and start fresh somewhere else.
Studies and leadership experts agree: when you clearly define your why, you activate a deeper level of motivation that’s not dependent on external rewards.
Take a moment to reflect. Write it down. Your why is your anchor and your engine; it keeps you grounded and keeps you moving forward.
My Personal Experience
There were days when waking up in cold, grey Lucerne felt impossible, especially during the fall semester. I had back-to-back meetings, lectures, and a long to-do list. Of course, I also had some hobbies and things I wanted to do for my well-being, which further increased the list.
But then I discovered the power of tiny routines: a 10-minute walk in nature, a playlist that lights me up, a 5-minute meditation or yoga flow. Those were my drops of water.
One thing that helps me tremendously is simply walking and letting my thoughts flow freely. I often talk to myself, asking: How am I really doing? If something is bothering me, I try to identify it and understand what it is and why it makes me feel uneasy. This kind of honest self-check often allows me to overcome difficult moments; just by walking. It helps me clear up the thoughts that, if left locked in my head, often feel messy and overwhelming.
So What Can You Do Today?
✅ Make a short list of the things that recharge you
✅ Write your “why” on a Post-it and stick it somewhere you’ll see every day
✅ Carve out 15 minutes a day just for yourself; no guilt, just fuel
