How To: IndoMie Goreng

After my second post, many of you wanted to know two main things through the comments on Facebook, as well as private messages on Instagram.

  1. What do I usually buy when I’m at the Asian store?
  2. What is IndoMie and how do you make it?

While I’d love to answer both questions right now, let’s focus on the second one, since my order from the Asian store is still on the way, so the answer for question 1 will come at a later date. Definitely stay tuned for that as well.

Back to question 2: it was very surprising that some of you didn’t know what IndoMie is, though I’m sure you’ve seen the packaging before, if you’re an instant noodle lover that is. The second part of that question did not surprise me at all. Let me explain..

Many Indonesians or people who have Indonesian friends or grew up in Indonesia will definintely know how to make IndoMie, especially Goreng. The most common mistakes I’ve seen non-Indonesians make is they add water into their bowl when making IndoMie GORENG… (queue all my Indonesians shaking their heads), yes, can you believe?

Now let me explain, like really explain. IndoMie is the brand of the instant noodle, found in most Asian stores, however some will also have Mie Sedap, which is basically the same. Now, the brand carries different types of instant noodles, where the packaging will also have different colors. On every packaging that says GORENG, you do not, and I emphazise NOT, add extra water into your bowl. The literal translation of goreng  is “fried”. Now connect the dots, IndoMie Goreng is fried noodles. Now the confusing part is, you don’t actually fry your instant noodles, you have to boil your noodles in water like you would pasta. Confused?

Here’s a “How To” video on making IndoMie Goreng and 3-4 ways it is traditionally served in an Indonesian household.

I hope you enjoyed the video and let me know if you have any questions below.

Stay tuned for the next post!

‘til then.

Have you ever moved to a country where you felt like you didn’t belong? All you wanted to do at first is find something that felt familiar? Hi, my name is Valerie, I’m 23, (half) Indonesian and I moved to Switzerland about a decade ago. In the first couple years I went on the hunt for (real) Asian food, by looking for the best restaurants and stores. I will be using this platform to provide you with insights on the best Asian restaurants and stores in the greater Zurich area, as well as inform you of stereotypical (indon)asian, pun intended, traits that you may not have known about. Also, if you’re interested in a recommendation by an Asian, of which Islands to visit in Asia: stay tuned. This platform should aid in learning about Indonesians, as well as spread the looooove for Asian cuisine and culture. I hope you enjoy the ride...
