How to read Yu-Gi-Oh Cards Lesson 3: Key Words (Conjunction – Function)

Lesson_3_Key_Words_LMG

Today’s lesson is by far the hardest topic we will be covering, so Ra students hope you enjoy today’s class on Conjunction. Ps, this is Bastion’s favourite field that’s also why he’s the star pupil of this class.

For those who haven’t attended lesson 1 Colon/Semicolon here is the link: https://blog.hslu.ch/majorobm/2022/04/05/l_m_g_read-yu-gi-oh-cards-lesson-1-colon-x-semicolon/

Lesson 2 Effects Summon / Built-In Summon: https://blog.hslu.ch/majorobm/2022/04/09/read-yu-gi-oh-cards-lesson-2-effect-monsters-x-build-effects/

As always we will be using the Color coding:

Colour_Coding_LMG

We will be covering Mate related cards.

First things first let’s break down the four words.

Cheat_Sheet_Key_Words_LMG

So we have:

  • Then
  • Also
  • And if you do
  • And

All these different key components impact the card when it comes to chaining, so it’s VITAL to know the difference, it helps us to know what we CAN and CANT influence. In the Meta, a lot of these keywords are overwritten by timing so we will be looking at these cases.

Timing_Lesson_3_LMG

THEN  Speed: (One after the other)

Let’s start with THEN we all know our alphabet A,B,C this is how THEN works. Everything written BEFORE THEN is A and everything AFTER THEN is B. If we wanted to negate the effect resolving we HAVE to target A, B can NOT be played if ADOSENT go through, you can look at it as if it were dominos, the first brick has to fall to knock over the rest.

Were going to have a look at Flundereeze they use a lot of THEN that is also overwritten by timing.

KONAMI_Yu-Go-Oh_Flundereeze
If this card is Tribute Summoned: You can add 1 “Floowandereeze” Spell/Trap from your Deck to your hand, THEN immediately after this effect resolves, you can Normal Summon 1 monster.
If we want to stop this card from resolving we HAVE to TARGET the sentence BEFORE THEN. In this case, all we have to do is Ash this card so now they CANT add 1 Spell/Trap or normal summon 1 extra monster. What we also have to understand is the timing in this card is very dangerous, if you wanted to chain to B you wouldn’t be able to the word IMMEDIATELY triggers a SIMUNTAINIUS action. If you have a card effect that would stop your opponent from Normal Summoning the Timing doesn’t care when A goes through, B acts as an IMMEDIATE action overwriting THEN and making it a simuntinus action. A is vital for THEN ALWAYS target the A, you WILL stop BOTH effects from happening.
Another example, same with Eglen:
KONAMI_Yu-Gi-Oh_Flundereeze
If this card is Normal Summoned: You can add 1 Level 7 or higher Winged Beast monster from your Deck to your hand, THEN immediately after this effect resolves, you can Normal Summon 1 Winged Beast monster.

Same here as before TARGET A to STOP B, the timing here is also overwritten by IMMEDIATELY. Ash A to stop A and B. Flundereeze are a perfect example of THEN as well as timing overwriting.

Now Lyrilusc – Bird Call also contains THEN but in this instance, the timing is one after the other (so normal).

KONAMI_Yu-Gi-Oh_Lyrilusc – Bird Call

Take 1 “Lyrilusc” monster from your Deck, and either add it to your hand or send it to the GY, THEN you can Special Summon 1 “Lyrilusc” monster with a different name from your hand. You can only activate 1 “Lyrilusc – Bird Call” per turn.

Here you can Ash and negate the whole card or set up a flud gate and stop them from Special Summoning. The difference between these cards is the timing, these 2 actions happen after each other.

Let’s move on to ALSO

ALSO speed: (Simutainus)

As we learned ALSO applies as much as possible which is usually a good thing. If one of our effects were negated it doesn’t matter the card resolves as much as possible…..but now let’s say that where to come back to bite us, a perfect example of this would be Mecha Phantom Beast Auroradon.

KONAMI_Yu-Gi-Oh_Mecha_Phantom_Beast_Auroradon

If this card is Link Summoned: You can activate this effect; Special Summon 3 “Mecha Phantom Beast Tokens” (Machine/WIND/Level 3/ATK 0/DEF 0), ALSO you cannot Link Summon for the rest of this turn.

What we have to understand is that A and B aren’t connected, so in this case, if I were to play token collector:

KONAMI_Yu_Gi_Oh_Token_collector

If a Token is Special Summoned (except during the Damage Step): You can Special Summon this card from the GY (if it was there when the Token was Special Summoned) or hand (even if not). You can only use this effect of “Token Collector” once per turn. If this card is Special Summoned: Destroy as many Tokens on the field as possible, and if you do, this card gains 400 ATK for each Token destroyed. Neither player can Special Summon Tokens.

This card tells us we can destroy as many tokens as possible. Now my opponent’s card tells them ALSO you cannot Link Summon for the rest of this turn. This still applies, ALSO forces the card to activate the effects AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE. We have now successfully locked our opponent out of link summoning plus we got rid of their token.

It’s VITAL to understand ALSO does not care what gets negated, A and B are separate parts if A doesn’t go through B will activate. Remember this when negating effects containing ALSO.

AND IF YOU DO speed: (Simultaneous)

A current deck that has this phrase is Adamancipator.

KONAMI_Yu-Gi-Oh_Adamancipator

If this card is in your GY: You can target 1 WATER Synchro Monster you control or in your GY; return it to the Extra Deck, AND OF YOU DO, place this card on top of the Deck.

Again this card CAN be stopped by Called by……Called by is just too OP not to play.

Pretty much all Adamanciparts use the keyword AND IF YOU DO, I know they can’t always be prevented but it’s important what to target when wanting to negate.

The important part of AND IF YOU DO is A IS required for B but if you cant do B just do A. Same with the negation prosses target A.

AND Speed: (Simultaneous)

AND is a business contract both have to be played you can’t have this without that, they are tied to the hip. There aren’t many cards that contain AND especially now in the meta AND is dangerous since A and B have to be valid.

Gasser

Hello and welcome to my blog about Yu-Gi-Oh. I'm 22 years old from Switzerland and my friends call me Bee. I'm in love with Yu-Gi-Oh I play it online and with my friends, although it's a fun game to play I've noticed it can get very complicated after a long series of chains, so I've dedicated this blog to explaining how to properly read and understand card effects, I'm currently doing my judge test and I wanted to pass on the knowledge I've obtained. Hopefully, by the end of my lessons, you have learned a little more about the card game. Anyways duelists thank you for checking out my vids and blogs ill be seeing you on the duelling field! ‹3
