Have you ever wanted to recreate a dish you got to enjoy during your vacation in Asia? That one Nasi Goreng meal you had at the beach in Bali that hit the right spot? Or the Pancit Goreng you had on the street food corner while you were on your way out of the city?
So, you have the recipe, but now you need the ingredients? Or maybe you don’t want to cook at all and just want to know where you can get all the good Asian snacks?
Your search is over and look no further because here are 3 different stores where you can buy almost all things Asian:
- Pasar Indonesia Möhlin
This is heaven for anything you want to find that is Indonesian. Whether it’s food or non-food items, you can find it all. From the various IndoMie (best Indonesian instant noodles) flavors to Sambal (chili paste) to Kecap Manis (literal translation: sweet ketchup, it’s sweet soy sauce) to your bantal guling (body pillows every Indonesian has): Pasar Indonesia has it all. So head on over there if you want to fry your own Krupuk (Indonesian Prawn/Crab/Fish Chips) or if you want to attempt your first time making Rendang (spicy slow cooked beef, literally the best Indonesian dish ever). Oh, and also, if you just want to try some Indonesian snacks, they have plenty!
- New Asia Market Zurich (NAM)
This store is your generic big Asian store in the city. They’re not specialized on a specific country, but rather have various goods from all over Asia. Whether you’re looking for Korean, Thai, Chinese products, NAM is where you will most likely find what you’re looking for. Not only do they have all the childhood snacks you’ve been reminiscing on, but also everything from spices to sauces to instant noodles to exotic fruit and vegetables. Also, if you want dumplings but you’re too scared to attempt to make them from scratch: they sell frozen goods as well, so you can enjoy delicious dumplings at home within 15 minutes!
For your midnight cravings of anything Indonesian, Jajananku is the perfect online shop. I love to get my snacks from there, especially Kacang Dua Kelinci (Indonesian roasted peanuts), Keripik Singkong (spicy Casava chips), and bengbeng (Indonesian chocolate bar). Those are the snacks I crave the most and I’m honestly so happy I can get these in Switzerland. They also carry health products which is especially interesting for my Tolak Angin lovers (liquid herbal medicine that kind of tastes like Jägermeister if it were infused with ginger) – Pro Tip: they don’t only carry the original version, but also the flu one. They also sell all the body oils from Minyak Kayu Putih to Minyak Telon. For my non-Indonesian readers, these body oils are used for babies and children, or when you have a cold as an adult, as the oil transfers warmth into your body and “keeps you from catching a cold”. They also sell drinks, frozen foods, and baked goods. Head on over to their website to order what your heart desires.
If you have any questions on how to make a dish or want to know which snacks I think you absolutely must try, leave a comment down below and I’ll be happy to provide!
Until next time,
Valerie
