Craftainability.

*Craftainability: the art of creating sustainable crafts.

At this point, I think it would be a good idea to show you what kind of knitted or crocheted products I personally use. These handcrafted products have a long-lasting life, if you treat them with love and care, just the way they are made. By using recycled yarn or yarn that has been produced by local yarn makers, with no chemicals or toxic colors and procedures, you not only care for the environment, but you also have a sustainable end product.

The Market Bag

What about making a market bag for yourself? I crocheted these ones 3 or 4 years ago using recycled cotton yarn and I have been using them ever since. The market bag doesn’t take any space and it is very light, so you can always carry it with you. You won’t need plastic bags any more. You can also take it to the beach or wherever you please. Bonus point: They can be washed in the washing machine.

Baskets

If you need to organize your space, baskets are always a good solution. These ones are crocheted, using again recycled textile. You can either use old t-shirts to make this kind of yarn or buy a ready-made one. They can be washed as well, although it would take them some time to dry out completely. You can make baskets in any size you want. You start by working the base diameter in circles and when you are satisfied with the size, you continue to ‘raise up’ the sides to the height you need.

Blankets

Cozy, fluffy, warm. What else do you need from a blanket? Infinite combinations of colors, sizes, styles, patterns. Fluffiness at its best. At some point I am planning to create pillow covers as well. Most of the yarn I used for these blankets, I bought it in Luxembourg, from a local shop that makes their own yarn in their back yard.

Placemats, coasters

Treat yourself with these handcrafted goods and give an upgrade to your table. I guarantee they are going to make you enjoy your lunch and dinner time more! Also, guests are always impressed by this kind of products. At least, my guests are! Again, the combinations are never ending and you can choose to create them according to your taste and needs. Whenever I want to crochet or knit something but I don’t know what exactly, I always end up making placemats or coasters or pods for hot plates. They can also be washed in the washing machine.

Bookmarks

Yes, I use crocheted bookmarks when I read a book or for my agenda!

Handcrafted products and especially knitted or crocheted ones, take great effort, money and long time to make. They are actually the result of an idea and a process. I know that not all people appreciate them. But it is important to understand that they are made with love and care, they are unique and thoughtful. Maybe then you will realize that it is worth to support businesses with handcrafted products and materials.

Till next time,

p.s. If you would be able to knit or crochet something what would it be?
