Berlin: A Vegan´s Dream

Long before I decided to go vegan, I had planned a trip to Berlin. The city has long been considered a pioneer and a mecca for veganism. Naturally, I was thrilled to explore the restaurants, food stands, and supermarkets for vegan delicacies.

Even on my way there with Deutsche Bahn (German Railway), I took a look at the onboard menu. They even had a vegan version of currywurst! Things were off to a great start.

Here are some highlights from my 6-day trip:

Vegan Sushi at Secret Garden ?

Just around the corner from our hotel on the famous Warschauer Strasse, we noticed a glowing sign for Secret Garden, offering entirely vegan sushi. We called and reserved a table immediately for our first dinner the next day. When we arrived, the restaurant was packed to the brim. The menu was incredibly diverse.

We started with a miso soup with tofu, which tasted like any other miso soup from a Japanese restaurant. Nothing special, but not bad either. Since we couldn’t decide, we ordered a bit of everything. ?

Despite the many guests, the preparation was very quick. We didn’t even have to wait 10 minutes for our sushi.

The highlight for me was the vegan salmon in the salmon and avocado maki rolls. I had to double-check online to ensure that they didn’t serve real fish in the restaurant because I couldn’t believe it. But it was indeed a vegan salmon alternative.

The Cheesiest Vegan Burger Ever ?

After a long day of hopping from one vintage store to another and drinking lots of oat milk cappuccinos, we craved something hearty, something greasy. So, we started looking for fast-food restaurants that also had vegan options. Just around the corner, we found the burger joint “Burgeramt.” This chain can be found all over Berlin. The ambiance in this place is unique. You can feel the hip-hop culture, and you can hear the heavy beats and bass from a distance.

The cashier was outside the restaurant smoking a cigarette and greeted us warmly. After a quick glance at the illuminated menu above the counter, we immediately spotted the vegan options.

I went for the “CHEEZUZ” burger, a large portion of fries, and the house beer. A heads-up: The portion of fries is huge, easily enough to fill two bellies! The prices, at least for me being Swiss, are quite reasonable, though still a bit pricey for a burger.

The burger was super juicy, with a very soft bun that wasn’t soggy. The sauce was incredibly delicious, and the cheese was so impressive that I had to double-check if it was really vegan. And yes, it was!

A Special Vegan Brunch

Café Morgenrot is a collectively organized restaurant and a political space. For example, everyone in the establishment earns exactly the same wage, and responsibilities are shared collectively, regardless of position. All ingredients are organically produced. They are also passionate about the environment, which is why they offer an entirely vegan brunch menu. That day, the offerings included bread, a salad of roasted carrots and chickpeas, vegan scrambled eggs (very tasty!), dips, no-ham strips, tofu in apple mustard marinade, and even a delicious chocolate coconut semolina pudding for dessert. All this for just 13 euros, and your stomach will be full for the entire day. However, the generous brunch is unfortunately only available on weekends. But they do offer complimentary (vegan!) cakes and coffee from Tuesday to Friday
