That moment when the sun reaches the top of the mountain is beyond compare: from violet to blue and to the golden glow of the first rays of sun… an awesome palette of colours greets you and the new day.
Have you ever imagined how wonderful would be to spend the early morning in the mountains, watching beautiful scenery around and admiring the nature? Waking up outside is always memorable, that’s why I truly recommend an overnight hiking trip. This kind of hike requires more preparation and commitment than a day hike, but it is absolutely worth it.
Here are the first tips you need to consider:
- Choose the location for your trip
- Think about the size of your group (this type of hike is better to make with your friends or like-minded hiking enthusiasts)</l
- Prepare essential equipment and clothing
- Plan your meals and water
I already advised for you some nice hiking posts, but you can also make your own research and choose the trail which you find the most exciting. While planning, please check the level of the hike and the type of the terrain. Based on this information plan your travel time and essential gear needed.
Once you chose the location, make a small research about local regulations. Can you have campfires? Are you allowed to take your tent with you, or you should have a look for hut nearby? Answer those questions beforehand to minimize all possible worries when you will be on the trail.
Group size and individual ability are important considerations. You should carefully think who you will invite for an overnight hike, since a hiking experience here really matters, Choose the person who you will comfortable with and who already made an overnight hikes.
Does your trail have huts for hikers to sleep at? If not, you’ll need to bring a tent with you. You should also consider those things like sleeping system, stove and fuel. Only after you pack those things, you’ll discover how much more gear (and weight) you’ll have to carry on an overnight trip than for a day hike. Don’t forget about ordinary hiking essentials, like proper shoes, raincoat, flashlight and necessary clothing. And of course – no cotton! Make sure your hiking shorts, pants, t-shirts, underwear and sports bra are made of quick-drying materials that wick moisture.
The amount of food to bring will depend on how your physical activity, your age and even the temperature. Canned foods are too heavy to take with you, so quick snacks and freeze-dried meals are more popular options. Check also the cook time for your food to make sure you bring enough fuel for cooking Take enough water with you, use sport bottles, which can be easily refilled and also explore preliminary the water sources on your way.
I am sure that if you follow my tips your overnight hiking experience would be not only unforgettable, but also safe and comfortable.

Getting up at 5am to meet the sunrise is less difficult once you are already on the mountain. Beautiful scenery, so much worth it. Warm dinner after an exhausting hike is the best! As well as a few beers 😉 😉
