After reading through my previous blog entries you may begin to understand that there is more than one reason that WiseArt or “Wizard” is the name of my blog and channel. My hope is that when we deepen our understanding of the world in relation to the arts, we will begin to achieve a higher level of artistry. This artistry will in turn intern give us a higher level of understanding. There are no limits, the more you learn the more you will realize you have more to learn. There is no limit except by the time and effort we put into our practice and understanding during our lifetimes.
Sometimes great art can seem like it is operating behind the scenes, behind a veil of what is possible and observable. My hope is that this veil will be lifted by furthering our understanding to give way to greater art and greater knowledge. Carl Jung also said that, “the practice of magic consists in making what is not understood understandable in an incomprehensible manner” (The Red Book: Liber Novus, p. 314).
As we endeavor to reach for deeper knowledge and greater skill, we will be able to influence aspects of the world around us. To be able to transmute ideas into reality or interact with or create phenomena. This is not an unachievable ability, for we have already acknowledged individuals throughout, polymaths and masters of arts and knowledge, who have made such impactful effects while alive and even after their deaths.
The ability to use art in combination with knowledge, or wisdom, in such a way is what makes one to the likeness of the wizard or the “magician” archetype. This ability to holistically and apply artistry and knowledge with a level of mastery is in a sense magic.
The words spelled by Shakespeare reverberate through the centuries influencing the stories of our socio-cultural and psychological perspectives. This no less than a power spell cast upon the English speaking world. Just the same, if you think about it, the scrolls and books of mathematical formulations written and passed on since antiquity are nothing less than magical tomes that help us depict and communicate how our world functions.
Humans have been using symbolism to communicate for all of our known history. No matter how this communication is done, the effectiveness of this communication is determinant to the intelligent use of symbolism within cultural contexts. The reason symbolism is so important for our communication is because it is relating to the contents of our psyches.
Effective communication through symbolism can be seen in almost every context from marketing, to entertainment media, and making up key aspects of cultures. The more we are able to understand these symbols and how to apply them to our work the better our work will be communicated and reciprocally received.
For those of you joining me on the Wise Art Journey, this is an important topic and aspect we can always incorporate into our work. Incorporating symbolism and psychology based design frameworks that will help us communicate our ideas better.
