Find Your Interior Aesthetic – A Fun Guide to Defining Your Style!

Your home should be a vibe and that is non-negotiable. It’s where you relax, recharge and express yourself… unapologetically. But… with so many interior styles floating around, how do you know which one speaks to you?

Don’t stress, I’ve got you! This guide will help you define your aesthetic and turn your space into a dreamy sanctuary that you won’t want to ever leave.

Step 1: Get to Know the Most Popular Aesthetics

Before identifying your personal style, it’s helpful to understand the different aesthetics available. Below are some of the most beloved interior design styles and their defining characteristics.

1. Minimalist – Less Is More

Minimalist design is characterised by clean lines, neutral tones, and clutter-free spaces. It prioritises functionality with sleek, simple furniture that serves a purpose and encourages a sense of tranquility by eliminating unnecessary decor. The colour palette is typically simple, often featuring whites, greys, and muted earth tones. This style is ideal for those who prefer an organised, serene environment with a modern touch.

2. Modern – Sleek & Sophisticated

Modern interiors feature bold statement pieces and contemporary materials. They maintain a neutral color scheme with accents of black, white, and metallics, and often incorporate open spaces, large windows, and an abundance of natural light. High-quality materials such as glass, metal, and polished wood are common. This aesthetic is suited for individuals who appreciate clean, streamlined design with a touch of drama.

3. Japandi – The Perfect Fusion

Japandi is a harmonious blend of Japanese minimalism and Scandinavian comfort. It incorporates natural materials such as light wood, linen, rattan, and bamboo, and uses a muted color palette with earthy tones, soft greens, and warm beiges. The overall atmosphere promotes simplicity and functionality, making it perfect for those who seek a balance between minimalism and warmth.

4. Industrial – Edgy & Full of Character

Inspired by urban lofts, industrial design features exposed brick, metal accents, and reclaimed wood. These spaces often have high ceilings and open layouts that contribute to a spacious, airy feel. The color palette tends to be dark and moody, with deep greys, browns, and blacks. Raw, unfinished textures such as concrete and steel are central to this aesthetic, which is best suited for those who love a rugged, unconventional atmosphere.

5. Eclectic – A Little Bit of Everything

Eclectic design celebrates individuality with a mix of colours, textures, and eras. It encourages the use of statement furniture, unique decor, and unconventional pairings. Often influenced by global styles, eclectic interiors feature vintage and handmade pieces. Bold patterns, layered textiles, and a variety of artistic elements create a lively and personalised space, making this ideal for those who love to experiment and express creativity through design.

6. Bohemian – Free-Spirited & Artsy

Bohemian interiors are rich in colours, patterns, and textures, offering a laid-back and artistic aesthetic. They incorporate woven textiles, macramé, vintage finds, and handcrafted pieces, and often feature an abundance of plants, earthy elements, and cosy layering. This style encourages self-expression through an eclectic mix of decor and artistic touches, making it perfect for those who value warmth, creativity, and cultural influences.

7. Traditional – Classic Elegance

Traditional interiors are defined by rich wood finishes, ornate details, and timeless furnishings. They emphasise symmetry and often use luxurious materials like velvet, silk, and marble. Deep, neutral tones such as navy, burgundy, and emerald add depth and warmth. Antique-inspired pieces, intricate mouldings, and formal layouts are common features, making this aesthetic best suited for those who appreciate timeless, well-curated interiors.

Step 2: Find Your Inspiration

If you are unsure which style resonates with you, start by gathering inspiration. Here are some practical ways to discover what truly appeals to you:

1. Create Pinterest Mood Boards

You should collect images of interiors that captivate you and analyse common themes. You can also identify recurring colours, materials and furniture styles. With that, you can compare different aesthetics side by side to see which one feels most suiting to you.

2. Browse Magazines & Instagram

Design publications provide curated, high-quality inspiration. Interior design influencers often highlight real-life spaces, sharing practical decor tips, styling tricks, and behind-the-scenes peeks into how they create aesthetically pleasing environments. By observing how they blend different styles, work with colour palettes, and utilise furniture and accessories, you can gain valuable insight and inspiration for your own home.

3. Analyse Your Wardrobe

Your clothing choices can reflect your interior preferences. If you favor neutrals and structured pieces, minimalism or modern design might be ideal. If you gravitate toward bold prints and textures, eclectic or bohemian styles may suit you best.

4. Observe Your Favourite Spaces

Think about the restaurants, hotels, or cafes where you feel most comfortable. Note the types of lighting, furniture, and decor that stand out, and identify design elements that make you feel relaxed and inspired.

5. Pay Attention to Artwork & Accessories

The types of art, patterns, and textures you prefer can be strong indicators of your design taste. Abstract, structured pieces may point to modern aesthetics, while handwoven or nature-inspired pieces align more with bohemian or Japandi styles.

Step 3: Experiment & Personalise

Now that you have a better sense of your preferred aesthetic, it is time to bring it to life. Here are ways to gradually transition your space:

1. Start with Small Changes

Try swapping out throw pillows, rugs, or artwork to experiment with different styles. Incorporate decorative items that reflect your chosen aesthetic and rearrange furniture to create a fresh perspective on your space.

2. Mix & Match Thoughtfully

Your style does not have to fit into one category. Blend different aesthetics to create a personalised look. For example, you might combine Japandi’s neutral tones with modern metallic accents. Be mindful of balance to prevent overwhelming the space (unless you’re into it).

3. Incorporate Budget-Friendly Finds

Explore secondhand stores and flea markets for unique pieces. DIY projects also allow you to customise decor affordably, and you can repurpose existing furniture by painting or reupholstering it to suit your aesthetic.

4. Play with Colours & Textures (my personal favourite)

Introduce new shades through accent walls or soft furnishings. Layer different materials like wood, metal, and fabric to add depth, and use greenery to bring life and freshness to your space.

5. Prioritise Functionality

Ensure that your decor choices support your lifestyle needs. Invest in multi-purpose furniture for practical yet stylish living, and create designated areas for work, relaxation, and entertainment.

6. Make It Personal

A well-designed home should tell your story. Display sentimental items, travel souvenirs, and meaningful artwork. Arrange your space in a way that feels comforting and inspiring to you.

Your interior aesthetic is not set in stone as it can evolve over time as your tastes change. The key is to experiment, have fun, and curate a space that brings you joy. By understanding different styles, gathering inspiration, and making intentional choices, you can create a home that feels uniquely yours.
