Crises. Uncertainty. Self-doubt.
We don’t talk about these enough, yet they are some of the most common and defining parts of our journey as students and young professionals living away from home.
Have you ever asked yourself:
? Am I on the right path?
? Should I have stayed in my hometown?
? Why does everyone else seem to have it together?
If yes, then this post is for you.
Let’s break the silence, normalize the struggle, and most importantly: explore ways to reconnect with ourselves when things feel a bit too much.
The Human Side of Growth
Success stories often skip the messy middle. But growth is never linear. Living, studying, and working in a new environment brings:
✔️ Constant pressure to perform
✔️ Social comparison (hello, LinkedIn 👀)
✔️ Homesickness
✔️ Financial and emotional fatigue
And yet, this messy middle is where the magic happens.
It’s where we pause, reflect, redefine. Sometimes, it’s not about pushing forward; but looking inward.
You’re Not the Only One
Sometimes, the most powerful thing you can do is simply talk to someone who’s going through the same thing; or even to those who seem to have it all figured out. You’ll be surprised how much they’re navigating beneath the surface, and how simply opening up to someone can ease a lot of your anxiety and overthinking.
“There was a time when I felt completely disconnected… What helped? Talking to others who were in the same boat.”
— Nora, 26, MBA student & intern in Zurich
“I thought I had made a mistake… But I gave myself 30 days to try fully embracing this life and it changed everything.”
— Alessia, 25, Law master student & part-time support in Lucerne
These stories are not rare. They’re real. And they remind us we’re not broken; we’re just transforming.
Tips & Tools to Reconnect with Yourself
When you feel lost or overthinking your decisions, try integrating one (or more) of the following activities into your routine:
1. Self-Reflection: Keep a 5 minutes “check-in” journal where you write your feelings and emotions every day. Ask yourself: What is this experience trying to teach me?
2. Reconnect with your “Why”: A topic we covered in the last post of my blog; why did you start this journey in the first place? Write your “mission statement” and keep it visible so that you can see it everyday and keep it in mind.
3. Embrace vulnerability: Reach out to someone: a friend, coach, classmate. Create or join small peer-support circles (e.g. monthly check-ins), with your fellow students, your siblings or friends. You’ll often find that others are just as in need of support as you are.
4. Protect your energy: Limit comparison triggers (unfollow, mute, pause) and integrate micro-moments of joy into your routine like coffee walks, music, cooking, etc.
5. Anchor into purpose: Volunteer, mentor others, teach something you know; growth comes from giving too!
