Global Wanderlust: Exploring the World at 18

Stepping into adulthood at 18, I found myself at a crossroads filled with excitement, uncertainty, and a burning desire for adventure. Never having traveled alone before, the prospect of stepping into the unknown was both exhilarating and daunting. With aspirations of furthering my education, I set my sights on obtaining an English certificate. Australia emerged as the perfect destination, offering not only renowned language programs but also a vast playground of natural wonders and cultural treasures waiting to be explored. Join me on a journey of self-discovery and exploration as I share the highs, the lows, and the invaluable lessons learned during my personal growth in the land Down Under.

Arrival in the Land Down Under

Touching down in Perth, Australia felt like stepping into a whirlwind of emotions. My departure was only filled with excitement, even my grandfather, couldn’t help but remark with a grin that I seemed more like I was off on a quick vacation than embarking on a journey spanning over nine months.
But as soon as I set foot on Australian soil the air crackled with anticipation, matching my own eagerness to explore this new world. Meeting my host family—a lively bunch with three kids all under two—was like finding a piece of home in a foreign land. Their warmth and laughter made me feel instantly welcome, erasing any lingering homesickness I may have had.
Even in the heart of the city, greenery seemed to spring up everywhere. For a small-town girl like me, the towering skyscrapers and bustling streets were a sight to behold. But what struck me the most was the friendliness of the people. From the moment I arrived, it felt like I was surrounded by friends, ready to show me around and make me feel at home.
Surprisingly, jetlag wasn’t even a problem. Maybe it was the adrenaline from all the excitement, but I barely felt tired as I dove headfirst into exploring everything Australia had to offer. And so began my adventure—a whirlwind of new experiences, new friendships, and unforgettable moments that would shape the journey of a lifetime.

Discovering Bali

So, picture this: I’m in Australia, right? Making the most incredible memories with friends that I’ll be texting until I’m old and gray. We did it all—surfing, shopping, eating our way through every street market imaginable. It was like a dream.
But then came the inevitable moment when I had to say goodbye to my host family after three months of feeling like one of their own. Bittersweet doesn’t even begin to cover it.
Next stop: Bali. I was psyched to meet up with this friend from Austria that I’d known from vacations in Austria. We were like two peas in a pod, exploring Bali like we owned the place. But our time together flew by, and before I knew it, it was time to say goodbye to her and hello to a buddy from Brazil that I met in the language school. We kept it real in Bali, crashing in low-cost hostels and getting a taste of local life. It was eye-opening, to say the least.
Christmas was a whole other story. Spending it without my family for the first time, on the other side of the world, had me feeling all kinds of emotions. But you know what? My new friends made it special in a way I never expected. And then, just like that, it was time to hop back on a plane and head to Australia.

Adventure through Australia

Alright, let me paint you a picture of my Aussie adventure: me, wandering the streets of Melbourne all on my lonesome. It was a bit nerve-wracking at first, but man, did I discover some hidden gems.
Fast forward to New Year’s Eve, and I’m living it up in Sydney with friends from Perth and some new buddies I met along the way. The fireworks over the harbor? Absolutely breathtaking.
But then, things really started to get interesting. I decided to buy a car, and suddenly I had travel buddies. First up, a girl from Italy and I hit the road together. Then, we picked up another traveler along the way—a girl from Luxembourg, Stephanie, who quickly became part of our little road trip crew. But when floods forced us to turn back, it was just Stephanie and me, heading back to Sydney. We had an instant connection as if we have known as during the entire time.

Back in Sydney, our crew expanded once more as two more travelers, a girl from England and one from Austria, joined us. We hit Melbourne next, but our group kept shifting—the girl from england left in Mebourne and n a guy jumped on board. Little did we know, sparks would fly between him and the Austrian girl, and suddenly we had a couple in our midst.
From there, it was all about the west coast. We drove all the way to Broome, soaking up every bit of Aussie scenery along the way. But eventually, our adventure had to come to an end. We sold the car, said our goodbyes, and went our separate ways, each of us forever changed by the incredible journey we shared.

Embracing the Unexpected

Alright, let me take you through the rollercoaster ride that was the next leg of my journey. Imagine me, reunited with my friend and host family in Perth—talk about a warm welcome back to familiar territory.
But then, just when I thought I had it all figured out, life threw me a curveball. Plans for exploring the East Coast of Australia and New Zealand got tossed out the window when my friend I met during my times in Perth got injured. She had to fly back home for surgery, leaving me feeling a bit lost and unsure of what to do next.
But hey, when one door closes, another one opens, right? I decided to dive headfirst into group activities, like sailing in the Whitsundays, camping in the outback, and hiking in Tasmania. And let me tell you, those experiences were nothing short of epic—each one a new adventure, a new story to tell.

Among all the hustle and bustle, I crossed paths with a girl from Canada who quickly became my partner in crime. We hit it off right away and before we knew it, we were plotting our next big adventure together: a month-long camper van trip through New Zealand.
And let me tell you, that month was one for the books. From stunning landscapes to spontaneous roadside stops, every moment was filled with laughter, friendship, and the kind of memories that last a lifetime. Who knew that a setback could lead to the trip of a lifetime? Life’s funny like that sometimes.

The thrill of coming home

Alright, let me tell you about the whirlwind of emotions that was my homecoming after nearly ten months of traveling. The excitement bubbling inside me as I boarded that plane, knowing that soon I’d be back in familiar territory, was almost too much to contain.
But here’s the kicker—I’d told my family and friends a different return date, all part of a sneaky plan to surprise them. So, after a long and sleepless flight back home, I was picked up at the airport by a good friend who was in on the secret. The anticipation was killing me as we made our way to my house.
And then, the moment of truth. I rang that doorbell, heart pounding in my chest, and waited with bated breath. The look of shock and joy on my family’s faces when they opened that door? Priceless doesn’t even begin to cover it.
The rest of the day was a blur of hugs, laughter, and happy tears as I surprised more family members and friends who had no idea I was back in town. It was like something out of a movie, seeing the smiles on their faces and feeling their arms wrap around me in tight hugs.
But as the dust settled and the initial excitement wore off, it was time to settle back into old routines. Catching up with friends over coffee, diving back into work, and finally putting that English diploma to good use—all while relishing in the warmth and familiarity of home. It was a homecoming I’ll never forget, filled with love, laughter, and the sweet satisfaction of a surprise well-executed.

Final Thoughts

Reflecting on my journey through Australia, I’m filled with a sense of gratitude for the unforgettable experiences, lifelong friendships, and personal growth that unfolded along the way. From the bustling streets of Melbourne to the pristine beaches of the Whitsundays, each moment was a testament to the incredible diversity and beauty of the Land Down Under. I encourage readers to embark on their own adventures and explore the myriad wonders that await in Australia. Whether it’s surfing along the Gold Coast, immersing oneself in Aboriginal culture, or hiking through the rugged landscapes of the Outback, there’s something for everyone to discover in this vast and enchanting country. As for me, I hold onto the hope of returning to Australia someday, to continue the adventure and create even more cherished memories in this remarkable corner of the world.

  4. Travel Light: Pack light and only bring the essentials. Opt for versatile clothing and pack items that can be easily mixed and matched. Remember to leave room in your luggage for souvenirs and other items you may acquire during your travels.
  5. Stay Safe: Prioritize your safety at all times. Research safety tips for travelers, stay informed about potential risks in your destination(s), and trust your instincts if you feel uncomfortable in any situation. Always keep important documents such as your passport and travel insurance information secure.

  7. Embrace Cultural Differences: Be open-minded and respectful of the local culture, customs, and traditions. Learn a few basic phrases in the local language, try new foods, and immerse yourself in the local way of life. Remember that cultural differences are part of what makes travel so enriching and rewarding.
  8. Stay Healthy: Prioritize your health and well-being while traveling. Stay hydrated, get plenty of rest, and eat nutritious meals to keep your energy levels up. Pack any necessary medications and take precautions to avoid illness and injury while on the road.

  1. Wow! I always wondered how people just meet while traveling and go on to explore for weeks. Did you meet these people in hostels? It sounds like one big adventure and countless memories! Please more 🙂

    1. Hi Sonja. I wondered the same before I went on this trip. 😉 I met the people in different ways. Some in school, hostels, or during an adventure, but also with the help of Facebook groups.
