The Äscher mountain hut is located in the canton of Appenzell, in the Schwende district. This picture-perfect inn has existed since 1846, making it one of the oldest mountain huts in Switzerland. The current structure was initially erected in 1860 as a rock shelter for hermit monks, and through the course of the years’ local farmers took over the reins. The Äscher then became a world-renowned travel destination in the 2010s, published in National Geographic.

Wasserauen – Äscher – Seealpsee – Wasserauen
The hike begins at the Wasserauen railway station. First, there is quite a steep path through the forest, approximately 1 hour, leading you to a picturesque landscape plateau. This part of the hike ascends steeply along the slope. The ascent from this point to the Äscher puts you through your paces. The mountain path climbs steeply along the mountain rock. Finally, you sight the Äscher mountain hut, which is perched precariously on the base of a 100-meter high vertical ledge. A sight you will not easily forget.
From this point, you can walk further up a rocky path to the Ebenalp and enjoy a spectacular view. Having reached this point, it is up to you whether you wish to take the cable car back down to the railway station or if you would like to see even more of the natural wonders of the Alpstein area. If the latter applies to you, I suggest you descend into the opposite direction you came from, past the Äscher hut towards the forest. Once again, through a beautiful picturesque forest. This path will lead you to the Seealpsee.
Fact O’Clock:
- A sign at the Äscher encourages parents to take their children on a leash due to the steepness of the trail
- The Äscher is listed under monument protection
- Seasonal opening: May – October

That looks cool, how many hours did it take you to hike?
It was a great hike! This hike took us about 3 hours and 45 minutes. However, this includes breaks along the way. I reckon it takes about 1.5 hours to walk up the mountain and another 1 to the Seealpsee. From this point back to the railway station it would be another 45 minutes to 1 hour (depending on which route you want to take). Alternatively you can also take the cable car up the mountain to the Äscher and walk down to the lake and back to the railway station. Endless possibilities 🙂
Nice post! I have many fond memories of here as child and my parents did indeed put my on a leash when we went up in the mountains when I was little!
I am happy you like the post and that you were able to link certain elements to fond memories of your childhood 🙂
