Stitch ‘n’ Bitch

Stitch ‘n’ Bitch is actually a term used to describe social groups that gather around and knit, crochet or sew. The first time I heard about this term was when I moved to Switzerland, 3 years ago. The group was based in Geneva, like myself at that moment. I was intrigued by the name and very curious to see what these people actually did during their meetings. Did they just gather around and gossip, while sipping coffee? Did they know each other? Were they young or old? Did they include both men and women? Did it actually involve any knitting, crocheting, crafting in any way?

It seemed pretty weird to me that you would actually want to gather around a table, at a public space, with other people and just Stitch & Bitch. I am used to knit at the peace of my couch, listening to music or watching TV. It is the moment for me to relax and release my thoughts. And not really talk with other people. Which is actually the opposite of what these people were doing.

Unfortunately, you are going to stay with that little doubt in your head, wondering about how these groups are. I never really went to any Stitch ‘n’ Bitch group, to be honest. But I think I would like to go once, just to get the experience. For me, knitting is like being in a private moment of self-awareness, meditation, balancing my thoughts and harmonizing myself. So, I think that if I share this experience with a group, it loses its meaning. Then again, maybe I have to go through the Stitch ‘n’ Bitch experience to see what it’s like, how people interact, what they talk about and if they knit the same stuff.

I will definitely let you know about it!

Till next time,

  1. I like your title and when I started to read I imagined some very cool rock’n’roll grannies gathering together. 😀
But probably it will be the contrary and maybe it’s an interesting experiment for you to participate once. Are this gatherings all around Switzerland?
