The 2018-2019 season is almost over. So it’s a good opportunity to look back and show some of the best mask designs of the season.
The end of the current season is in sight. Currently the two Conference Finals between the San Jose Sharks and the St. Louis Blues, as well as the Caroline Hurricanes and the Boston Bruins are played. This season we saw many top goalkeepers with incredible goalie masks. Here are some of my favorites for the 2018-2019 season.
Louis Domingue – Tampa Bay Lightning
Domingue’s mask is painted by David Gunnarsson of daveart. The mask is a tribute to his team, the Tampa Bay Lightning, and also to the city of Tampa. More precise it’s a tribute to two Lightning legends: Martin St Louis and Vincent Lecavalier. The players are drawn in sketchy style on both sides of the mask. The mask also features the skyline of Tampa on the chin. I personally love the simple combination of white and blue with bolts in the blue X. Thor with the lightning bolt in his hands on the top is an absolute eyecatcher and fits the classic theme of the mask perfectly.
Marc-Andre Fleury – Vegas Golden Knights
Fleury’s mask is pure Vegas. On the left side you’ll recognize the famous “Welcome to Fabulouse Las Vegas Nevada” sign, the Vegas skyline with the High Roller Ferris wheel and a couple of charging golden knights. The right side features a huge golden knight with a Vegas shield on a battle horse. All in all, the mask is shining and colorful – just like Las Vegas itself. The mask is painted by Griff Airbrush.
Robin Lehner – New York Islanders
I already wrote about Robin Lehner’s mask in a blog post. I love the story behind this mask and the journey it describes. The mask is a work of art from the hand of daveart. It features Robins story in a sketchy style all drawn in black and white. The design is proof that it doesn’t always need bright and eye-catching colours to stand out from the crowd. This mask does it all with simplicity, great artwork and a unique story behind it.
Aaron Dell – San Jose Sharks
Aaron Dell and his scarecrow. Over the years, Dell has worn Goalie masks with the scarecrow design over and over again – and the design never gets boring. David Gunnarsson of daveart always comes up with new ideas, variations and details to transform the mask into a badass looking scarecrow. For this season, the mask covers a shark breaking through the scarecrow mask. I can’t wait to see the next chapter in the scarecrow book for the 2019-2020 season.
Just to see the evolution of Dell’s scarecrow, here is his mask from last season. The mask was also painted by daveart.
John Gibson – Anaheim Ducks
John Gibson of the Anaheim Ducks had several masks for this season. But his retro style anniversary mask tops them all. To celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Anaheim Ducks he worn a goalie mask with the legendary Mighty Ducks logo on the top of it. The sides are covered with teal wings on a purple background. The mask also references to Gibson’s hometown Pittsburgh. On the sides you’ll notice the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Pittsburgh Pirates logo surrounded by purple thunder bolts. The backplate displays all the names of the Anaheim Ducks players who won the 2007 Stanley Cup. The mask is brought to life by Shell Shock Designs & Paint. The combination of the colors and the overall design is an absolute eye-catcher and definitely one of my favorites of the 2018-2019 season.
There are so many other beautiful designs. This is just a small selection that I personally like. As the season draws to a close, I’m curious to see what designs we’ll see next season. Until then, I’ll provide you with designs on my Instagram account.

Künstlerische Designen!! Alles sind perfekt, aber für mich würde ich sagen, dass “Vegas Golden Knights” sehr auffällig ist!
