The perfect podcast: Conduct of an episode.

Hello readers,

I am very happy to have you on my page again. This week, we are going to focus on the episode itself. Here are the questions this post will try to answer: what should be the conduct of an episode, how long an episode should last, who should speak and so on and so forth… Ready? GO!

Conduct of an episode

The most important thing when you have a podcast show is to have recognition. Something that allows people to know that it is actually you at anytime. For that, you need a very good intro and outro that you will add to every single episode you have. Here is what they should both contain:

The theme song must be well chosen. If your company has a theme song already, use it! Try not to use a song that everybody knows or that is trendy at the moment. It could become the type of songs everybody loved at a certain point in time which is now bothering everybody then.

Now that we have talked about intro and outro, let’s talk about the main part of the podcast. This one is impossible to define and could be very diverse depending on what you want to talk about. Let’s assume you want to have sort of interviews between experts about a products sold by your company (I choose this example because it is the podcast type I do and therefore feel the most comfortable to give you advice on).

Before I keep writing, it might be easier for you to see an example. In the filmed podcast below, you can see what we do at Siemens Smart Infrastructures in terms of intro, outro and core of the episode with the interview: Buildings of Tomorrow, episode #3.

What do you think? Tell me in the comments, I would be happy to answer your questions and read your feedback.

Length of the episodes

The length of the episodes is pretty much up to you but there is kind of a rule that podcaster observe. The more frequent you podcast the shorter the episodes. If I still use Siemens podcast as an example, we launch two episodes every Wednesday and they last between 4 and 10 minutes which makes an average of 17 minutes per week. Below you can see the recommendations of podcast award winner Daniel J. Lewis, more information here.

Alright, enough information for today, don’t you think? Do not hesitate to comment and share this article. Listen to podcasts and see you next week!

The podcasts were born inadvertently in England, when the British journalist Ben Hammersley contracted the words iPod and broadcast in 2004. The following year, Apple took the invention into consideration by launching its own app: Apple Podcasts. This new radio idea had then 3000 podcast channels and counts nowadays over 800,000 (dec. 2019). In these blogs posts, we are going to figure out how to have a successful podcast worldwide has a multinational company with a B2B focus.
