Although it is a very long list of the highest railways, I’m going to give the most appealing ones to me.
These are the examples from Switzerland where I’m living right now.
1. Jungfrau Railway
Of course, the name is coming from the three magnificent peaks of Jungfrau 4,089 meters.
Its importance is being the highest railway in Europe.

2. Gornergrat Railway
It is located in the canton of Valais with an altitude of 3,089 m and thus is the second highest railway in Europe after the Jungfrau.
Through Gornergrat Railway, you can find yourself in an instant at Zermatt.
There are several stops along the line that you can go to popular ski areas.
You can’t forget the spectacular views of the Matterhorn; its peak represents the most famous Toblerone chocolate.

3. Bernina Railway
It is the highest railway crossing in Europe and the third highest railway in Switzerland.
The train passes through 55 tunnels and over 196 bridge from Chur to Tirano and connects the north of Europe to its south.
