Training can sometimes feel repetitive and dull, making it difficult to stay motivated. We’ve all been there—when the excitement fades and the effort start to feel like a chore. But staying motivated is key to achieving long-term goals.
In this blog post, I’m sharing my personal tips for staying motivated through workouts, even on those tough days when all you want to do is skip the gym.
1. Set Clear, Achievable Goals
Motivation can be tricky—it’s not something that’s constant, and it can fluctuate from day to day. That’s where having well-defined goals comes in. Why do you train? What are you working towards? Whether it’s improving your performance, achieving a specific body goal, or simply becoming stronger, having a clear goal gives your workouts purpose and direction.
When motivation dips, having a solid goal to focus on can be a game-changer. You’ll always have something to remind you of why you started in the first place. I recommend creating a vision board with images and words that represent your goals—whether it’s a photo of your ideal physique, a target running distance, or the number on the scale that you want to reach. Place it somewhere you’ll see it every day—this visual reminder will keep you motivated, even on the tough days, and push you to show up for your workouts.
2. Consistency is the key
Motivation is fleeting and relying on it alone isn’t enough to stay on track. That’s why consistency is so important. Instead of waiting for motivation to hit, make it a habit to show up every day. The way you feel doesn’t always have to dictate the outcome.
It doesn’t matter if you’re not at your best or don’t feel 100%—just showing up is the most important part. Even on the days when motivation is low, committing to a workout, whether it’s running just 3 km or going for a walk, will keep you moving forward. Over time, consistency becomes a habit, and that’s when you’ll see real progress.
You don’t have to be extreme. Just consistent.
3. Make it fun
The key to staying motivated for me is the variety in the sports I do. I make sure to choose activities I genuinely enjoy, and I always incorporate sports that make me feel good—both physically and mentally. Whether it’s the thrill of volleyball or the peace of a hike, I love mixing things up.
My hybrid training routine ensures that no two weeks are the same. Each week brings a fresh combination of activities, keeping things exciting and preventing boredom from creeping in. The constant change in my workouts is what keeps me engaged and motivated, making every session something to look forward to.
4. Surround Yourself with Supportive People
One of the biggest motivators for me is surrounding myself with like-minded individuals—people who are passionate about sports and share similar goals. Having a community that truly understands your journey makes a huge difference. These people know how challenging it is to stay consistent and keep showing up, especially on tough days. They celebrate your progress and push you to do better because they’ve been there themselves.
Spending time with like-minded people isn’t just about training—it’s about enjoying shared hobbies and bonding over something you love. This sense of connection makes training more enjoyable and fulfilling, and it keeps you motivated to keep going.
On the flip side, when I spend time with people who aren’t as invested in sports, I sometimes find myself drifting away from my goals. Their lack of passion can unknowingly influence my behaviour, making me de-prioritize my own training. That’s why it’s so important to surround yourself with people who inspire you to stay on track and push yourself further.
5. Follow People Who Share Your Values
I’m not a huge fan of social media, especially when it comes to following influencers who only focus on perfection. However, I’ve found that following sports influencers who create fun, motivating, and relatable content really helps me stay engaged. It’s comforting to see others face similar challenges in their training or running journeys—it reminds me that I’m not alone. Their hard work motivates me to keep going, and I often pick up valuable tips, whether it’s improving my gym form or making running more enjoyable.
Remember, motivation will fluctuate, but when you focus on the process and find what keeps you excited, it becomes easier to stay on track.
