Riding the Networking Wave: Your Guide to Authentic Professional Growth

It’s not just what you know, it’s who you know…

When moving to a new city from your hometown, building your network might seem like an uphill battle. New city, new culture, new language. But this is actually your best chance to create authentic, powerful professional relationships that will shape your future.

Networking isn’t about collecting business cards. It’s about creating value-driven connections that grow into opportunities: internships, mentorships, collaborations, or even your first full-time job.

5 Smart Ways to Build a Network That Works for You

  1. Show up at university events, workshops, or local meetups: ask questions and be curious.

  2. Polish your LinkedIn profile: it’s your digital business card and storytelling platform.

  3. Keep in touch with classmates and coworkers: today’s peers are tomorrow’s leaders.

  4. Don’t be afraid to reach out: request a coffee chat or an informational call. People love to share what they’ve learned.

  5. Ride the wave: if you feel a good connection, follow up, stay engaged, be present.

Give Your Best, Always!

Networking opens doors, but your skills, attitude, and consistency keep them open. Be the kind of person others want to work with: reliable, enthusiastic, and genuine.

  1. Hi Anaïs, unfortunately, I didn’t had any connection in the past, which I could rely on. And even the opposite: Honestly I’m kinda upset with this whole networking topic. In current times, you only can get a job if you have connections. I had some bad luck in the past, where at the end someone else got the job, internship or the apprenticeship because he/she was the son/daughter, nephew, friend, whatever of an important person even though they weren’t qualified sometimes at all. I just hope for the future that persons will be acknowledged by their abilities and knowledge and not just being the daughter of or niece of someone!

    1. Hi Géraldine, thank you for sharing this so honestly! I totally understand your frustration. It’s tough when effort and talent don’t seem to be enough, especially when others get ahead through connections. I agree: skills and motivation should matter most.

That said, I try to see networking as building real, supportive relationships, not shortcuts, but spaces where your potential is recognized. I’m rooting for you, and I hope you find the opportunities you deserve 💪✨

    1. Thank you Erato! 🌊 Sometimes all we can do is stay present, trust ourselves, and ride the wave… even when it’s unpredictable. So glad it resonated with you! 💙
