North Macedonia: Not on Your Travel List? Let Me Give You a Reason to Add It

There’s a small country in the heart of the Balkans that you might not find on a postcard or a trending travel list. Maybe you’ve never heard of it. Maybe you’ve never thought about visiting. But for me, it’s everything.

North Macedonia is where my roots are. It’s where I first learned how to dream — surrounded by mountains, family stories, and the quiet kind of beauty that never needs to shout. It’s not a place of luxury or fame, but it’s full of soul. And that makes it unforgettable.

I grew up here. I studied in Skopje, spent magical summers in Ohrid , wandered the elegant streets of Bitola, and learned to ski (and fall) in Mavrovo. Each of these places carries a part of who I am. This isn’t a tourist guide. It’s a piece of my heart.

Before I tell you more, I want you to feel it for yourself , through this short video I made. It’s not perfect, but it’s honest. Just a collection of quiet moments, everyday beauty, and places that raised me.

I hope this glimpse into my country made you feel something and maybe, just maybe, you’ll think about visiting one day.

Hi, I’m J. I grew up in beautiful, complicated Macedonia, a place full of flavor, stories, and heartbreak. I didn’t leave for adventure. I left because I had to. Now I live in Switzerland, caught between two worlds. This blog is my little corner to share it all: the food, the traditions, the culture shocks, the homesickness and the magic of holding on to who you are while becoming someone new. Welcome to my story, between borders. If you’ve ever felt torn between where you are and where you should be, you’re not alone.
