Setting Up Your First Home: The Essentials You Actually Need

Moving into your first home is exciting but can also be scary and overwhelming. With endless Pinterest boards, aesthetic ideas, it is easy to get lost in the decorating before you have covered the basics. Well the answer you may ask? Think functionality first and then proceed with styling.

The Mood House guide will take you through what you actually need, what can wait and how to set up your space without breaking the bank. Of course, once the basics are down, you can go crazy with decor!

Step 1: The Essentials You Need Right Away

Firstly, don’t get overwhelmed! Before you worry about decor, focus on the core items that will make your home functional from day one.

1. Comfy Bedroom Space

Must-have: A good (permanent) mattress. Don’t worry about whether you have a bed frame yet. Having a mattress that you want to keep will ensure a good comfortable first night of sleep.

Tip: Invest in a good mattress you can afford! If it’s still too pricey there are always second-hand platforms where you can buy high-quality items. For example, Facebook Marketplace or that local second-hand store near your home.

 2. Seating That Works For You

Must-have: If you aren’t ready to splurge on a couch yet, start off with some comfortable chairs. A full set of chairs can wait but you do need somewhere to sit other than your bed.

Tip: If the budget is too tight at this early stage, go for some floor cushions or throw pillows. These items can still elevate your space at a later stage too.

3. Basic Kitchen Equipment

Must-have:

  • Some plates, bowls and utensils
  • A good knife with a chopping board
  • A pan and a pot
  • Your go to essentials (mine would be a coffee maker)

At this early stage, you don’t need all the fancy kitchen equipment and appliances. You can make do with the basic essentials when you’ve just moved in!

4. Storage & Organisation Basics

Must-have: Storage is always essential to organise and hide your things, especially when you move and have so many boxes. Purchasing a few stylish storage boxes for your bedroom and bathroom can be a complete game changer.

Tip: To maximise vertical storage if you are short on space can be very beneficial. This can be wall-mounted shelves, over-the-door organisers or stackable storage boxes.

Step 2: What Can Wait (But You’ll Want Later)

Once you have the essentials down, you can slowly add pieces to reflect your style and personality (stay tuned for future blog posts). Here are some items that aren’t urgent but will make your space feel more like home.

  • Artwork & Wall Decor: Start with DIY prints or second-hand finds before investing in collectable items. Trust me, this does not have to be expensive!
  • Plants: Plants are one of the simplest ways to elevate your space. Not only does it add colour but instantly adds life to a space.
  • Rugs & Curtains: Another thing that can just elevate your space and transform any room.
  • Decor: Including your personal style can instantly make a space more homey and individual.

Step 3: How to Set Up Your Home on a Budget

If you’re furnishing your home on a tight budget, here are some smart strategies to save money.

  • Buy Second-Hand: Thrift stores and Facebook Marketplace are goldmines for quality furniture at a fraction of the price. Just be patient, I promise that you will be able to find items that you love.
  •  DIY Where You Can: Instead of buying expensive decor, try painting old furniture, making your own wall art, or using peel-and-stick wallpaper for an easy, renter-friendly upgrade.
  • Prioritise Multi-Use Items: Opt for dual-purpose furniture, like a sofa bed or an ottoman with storage, to save both space and money.
  • Start Small & Build Over Time: You don’t need to furnish everything at once. Live in your space, figure out what you actually use, and add decor gradually.

These are some tips for you to kick-start your move without worrying too much about whether you have everything just yet.
