Eating on the go in Lucerne

I have been living vegan for a while now. While I am still adjusting to my new form of living there is a particularly big challenge which I have yet to master: eating on the go. Before turning vegan I could just walk in to any shop and buy whatever I felt like. Without any limits to your diet you always find something tasty and convenient. Especially if you are in a hurry at a train station for example. There is always a small shop nearby that sells sandwhiches and what not. As a student at HSLU in Lucerne, Switzerland, living a 50 minute train ride away in Zurich I’ve encountered firsthand the difficulties of maintaining a plant-based diet in a world filled with fast food and convenience meals that often cater more to traditional dietary preferences.

One of the primary struggles I face is the limited options available at the university cantina. Despite efforts to provide diverse choices, the vegan selection remains sparse, leaving me with few appealing options. Even popular supermarkets like Migros and Coop offer a less-than-versatile range of vegan convenience foods, making it challenging to grab a quick bite between classes or you just accept the fact that you eat the same lunch at least twice a week.

However, amidst these challenges, there is a glimmer of hope in the form of meal prepping. Recognizing the limitations of my on-the-go dining options, I’ve learned to embrace the art of preparing meals in advance. By dedicating some time each week to plan and prep my meals, I ensure that I always have delicious and nutritious options at hand, regardless of my busy schedule.

Meal prepping not only saves me time and money but also empowers me to make healthier choices that align with my values. With a bit of creativity and planning, I’ve transformed the struggle of eating vegan on the go into an opportunity to nourish my body and support sustainable food practices.

In conclusion, while the journey of eating vegan on the go may present its challenges, it is not without solutions. By embracing meal prepping and seeking out alternative dining options like Tibits, I’ve learned to navigate the complexities of maintaining a plant-based diet in a fast-paced world. And through it all, I remain committed to my vegan lifestyle, knowing that every meal I choose reflects my dedication to compassion and sustainability.

In conclusion you are best off if you prepare your meals in advance. Make sure you stock up on vegan snacks since they are not always easily available, especially nearby.

If you don´t have time or the energy to plan and cook your meals, here are 3 of my favourite restaurants in Lucerne:

  1. Tibits

One alternative I’ve really grown to appreciate is Tibits, a buffet-style restaurant conveniently located in Lucerne Station, just a stone’s throw away from HSLU. Tibits offers a vibrant array of p
lant-based dishes. But pay attention, not everything is vegan, there are a few vegetarian options as well. Make sure to check out their meatballs, you wouldn´t believe there is no meat in them! It is rather pricey, so you don´t want to go there day by day.

  2. Restaurant Majorelle

From hummus to falafel to babaganoush, who doesn´t love a table stacked with mezze. With lots of vegan options the Restaurant Majorelle offers a culinary explosion on your table. Make sure to go with a friend and order as many small dishes as you can.
