“The Drink of the Gods”

I was born in Guadalajara,Mexico. The Land of Tequila!

Guadalajara,Mex

Having said that…chances are, that you think I do tequila shots for breakfast or maybe a funny anecdote related to this drink just came to your mind. Either way; as fun as that sounds, there is more to it than you imagine. Which is why through this blog, I would love to share some interesting insights and show you that Tequila is more than just another shot.

So first thing’s first…

WHAT IS TEQUILA?

Agave Fields

Tequila is a spirit resulting from fermentation and distillation of the Agave plant, which only grows in some regions of Mexico. There are around 295 species of Agave but only 1 can be used for the production of Tequila.

It is a drink of ancestral origin, which has been produced since the 16th century. It takes the name of the place where it was born and where in the present day, you can also find a big number of factories dedicated to the production of this drink.

Legend says that Tequila was discovered during an electric storm, when lightning fell on an agave field and caused a fire. Later, the vapors heated the agave balls causing honey with a sweet taste and pleasant aroma to emerge from it.

This event captured the attention of the natives; who then discovered that if fermented, it generated relaxing powers and euphoric effects when drinking it and so they thought it was a gift from the gods of drunkenness. Sounds like they had a good time!

However, when the conquerors came to our territory once their brandy supplies were consumed, they turned to other alternatives, setting the start of the new era of Tequila as we know it.

I hope you liked this short introduction!

Come back next week to find out about the Tequila elaboration process.

Salud and ‘till next time!
