WiseArt Blog 7: Jungian Archetypes, Storytelling, and the Creative Journey

Carl Jung was a modern figure unique in his efforts to holistically pursue both the sciences, arts, and the seemingly more mystical aspects of human psychology throughout human history.

With this interest in the human mind and how it has shaped cultures and societies throughout time and space, he developed his theories on the archetypes. Jung wrote, “There are as many archetypes as there are typical situations in life. Endless repetition has engraved these experiences into our psychic constitution…” (Collected Works, Vol. 9, Part 1, p. 48–49).

These archetypes make up the structure and functions of our psychological states and evolutions. Their characteristics can be seen through one of the most human of artistic pursuits: storytelling. The human need for stories tells its own truths about the makeup of our minds.

Myths—originally oral stories—later became preserved through writing. Within these immortalized legends, archetypes emerge. These symbolic characters represent various states of human existence, dispositions, and reactions.

Recognizing archetypes can prepare us for life’s challenges and teach us how to wield the power of narrative. For our exploration, the most important archetypes are the Sage, Creator, Magician, Hero, Ruler, and Jester.

The Sage, Creator, and Magician

The Sage is one who has spent a lifetime gathering knowledge and wisdom to be shared. The Creator is driven by the passion to build and express through constant innovation. The Magician uses their accumulated wisdom and artistic tools to enact change and gain deeper understanding.

These three often appear in myths as mentors to the Hero—someone on a transformative quest. The guardian figure, already a master of certain arts, passes on their knowledge to prepare the Hero for the challenges ahead.

What’s often untold is how that guardian became wise. Every master was once an apprentice, shaped by their own trials.

The Hero’s Journey to Rulership

The Hero archetype often evolves. Through hardship, they may eventually become a Ruler—a leader who has earned the right to govern by learning from struggle. Classic figures like Marcus Aurelius or King Arthur embody this progression: warriors who become wise and just kings after transformation through adversity.

A Ruler may also be advised by figures representing the Sage, Creator, or Magician. These advisors lend depth to rulership—reminding leaders of the principles that helped them rise. Yet, another surprising figure sometimes sits close to the throne: the Jester.

The Jester: Trickster and Truth-Teller

The Jester, or Fool, is often respected by Sages and Magicians, who recognize their mastery of illusion, performance, and subversive truth. The Jester can speak the unspeakable through humor, cloaking truths in riddles or satire.

This is what makes them likable to kings and similar to magicians—their power lies in manipulating perception and exposing reality in playful disguise. Their honesty can be sharper than that of the Ruler’s official advisors. Yet, they are unpredictable—sometimes allies, sometimes threats, sometimes even protagonists themselves.

The Jester’s duality makes them one of the most psychologically rich archetypes. They disarm with laughter but cut to the heart of matters. Figures like Loki in Norse myth illustrate this paradox well—simultaneously destructive and revealing.

Living the Archetypes

Jung explained why archetypes matter: “The ego is always caught between opposing forces—archetypal figures that exert influence in different ways at different stages of life” (Collected Works, Vol. 9, Part 2, p. 8–10).

We all play different roles throughout our lives—each role responding to context, relationships, and stages of development. As Shakespeare put it, “All the world’s a stage… and one man in his time plays many parts.”

Understanding these archetypes isn’t just for storytelling—it helps us recognize who we are becoming and how we interact with the world.

The Psychological Journey of the Creator

This archetypal journey is especially relevant to those who identify with the Creator. The Creator archetype is driven not just by the desire to make, but by a psychological need to give form to inner truths—visions, ideas, dreams.

The path of the Creator is filled with uncertainty, trial, and deep introspection. They often oscillate between the wisdom of the Sage, the transformational urge of the Magician, and the light-hearted resilience of the Jester.

Creators must learn when to listen, when to experiment, and when to let go. They must also navigate solitude, criticism, and the tension between perfection and expression. The archetypes can serve as internal guides—voices that surface at different stages of the process, helping the Creator mature psychologically as they create materially.

Jester, Ruler, and Magician in Branding

In branding, the Jester, Ruler, and Magician/Sage archetypes provide powerful frameworks for connecting with audiences.

The Jester represents wit, irreverence, and entertainment. Brands like Old Spice, M&M’s, or Wendy’s Twitter persona use humor and surprise to charm and disrupt. They break rules while speaking truths others avoid, making them relatable and memorable.

The Ruler archetype reflects order, control, and authority. Brands like Rolex, Mercedes-Benz, or IBM present themselves as leaders—promising structure, trust, and high standards. They appeal to those who value reliability, excellence, and legacy.

The Magician/Sage speaks to transformation, insight, and vision. Apple, TED, or National Geographic embody this archetype, guiding customers toward discovery or change. These brands offer more than products—they offer possibility.

By aligning with an archetype, companies, creators, and even products develop an emotional narrative that audiences instinctively understand. The brand becomes a character in its own right—one that tells a meaningful story through its design, voice, and actions.
