Lily’s Wedding Diary: Budgeting: Where to Save and Where to Spend

When I started planning, I thought Pinterest would be my biggest challenge  but it turned out to be the budget. I had no idea what anything really cost or where it was okay to spend less. Every decision felt huge. I didn’t want to blow all our savings, but I also didn’t want to cut corners on the parts that mattered. If you’re feeling the same way, here’s what I learned about where to spend, where to save, and how to make choices you won’t regret.

Where to Spend More (It’s Worth It)

These are the areas where spending a bit extra can make a big difference either for your experience or how you remember the day.

Venue
Your wedding location sets the tone for everything. A beautiful, well-run venue can save you time, stress, and even money on décor. It’s the space where all your memories will happen choose one you love.

Photography and Videography
When the day is over, your photos and video are what remain. A professional will know how to capture the best moments, in the best light, without making you feel awkward. This is not the place to cut corners.

Entertainment
Music can make or break the atmosphere. Whether it’s a DJ or live band, great entertainment keeps the energy up and the guests on the dance floor. This is what people will talk about after the wedding.

Where to Save (Without Sacrificing Style)

These are areas where keeping it simple still looks great  and no one will notice you didn’t overspend.

Invitations
Printed invites are nice, but don’t need to be expensive. You can design your own or use a simple online template. Consider sending save-the-dates by email to save even more.

Favors
Most guests forget to take them home. If you want to offer something, keep it small and meaningful or skip it altogether. A donation to a cause you care about can be a thoughtful alternative.

Decor
You don’t need to decorate every corner. Focus your budget on the ceremony area, head table, or a few photo-friendly spots. DIY touches like candles, greenery, or printed signs can look elegant and personal.

How a Planner Can Help Save Money

Working with a wedding planner can actually help you stay on budget. While it may seem like an added cost at first, a skilled planner knows how to save money in the right places.

✔ They know which vendors offer real value
✔ They can negotiate better prices or extras
✔ They help avoid last-minute costs and surprises
✔ They guide your budget based on what truly matters to you

Even without a planner, these strategies can help you make smart spending choices and reduce unnecessary stress. When deciding where to spend or save, ask yourself: “Will we remember this one year from now?”If the answer is yes, it might be worth the splurge. If not, it’s a great place to simplify.

What’s Next?

The wedding isn’t the finish line it’s just the beginning. In the next post, we’ll look at how to handle the big day itself, what unexpected problems might pop up (even if you have a planner), and how to make the most of the days and years after from meaningful wrap-up tasks to unforgettable anniversary celebrations.
