Mudarse a otro país suena emocionante y lo es. Como Latina, vengo de una cultura cálida, expresiva y espontánea… y sí, también un poquito más ruidosa. Sabía que Suiza sería diferente, pero no imaginé hasta qué punto lo sería.
Estas son algunas de las diferencias culturales que más me sorprendieron y que, con el tiempo, también me enseñaron:
La puntualidad es ley
Aquí todo funciona como un reloj. Si alguien dice 10:00, es exactamente a las 10:00. El transporte público no se queda atrás: trenes y buses salen y llegan a la hora exacta.
El silencio se respeta
Desde el transporte hasta las casas, se valora la tranquilidad. Después de las 10 p. m., incluso una conversación en el balcón puede ser demasiado.
Domingo = pausa obligatoria
Nada abre ese día. Al principio me frustraba, ahora lo disfruto como una oportunidad real de descanso o salir a reconectar con la naturaleza.
Reciclar es parte de la rutina
Todo se separa: papel, cartón, vidrio, latas… Al comienzo fue confuso, ahora lo valoro como una forma diaria de cuidar el planeta.
Hablar varios idiomas es común
Alemán, francés, inglés… a veces todo en una sola conversación. Intimida al principio, pero te impulsa a aprender.
La amabilidad es silenciosa
No te llenan de palabras, pero sí de gestos: respetan tu espacio, ayudan sin hacer ruido. Solo hay que aprender a verlo.

Living in Switzerland feels like being in a country where everything works perfectly… even if at first you’re not quite sure how to fit in. I’ve learned to appreciate this order with humor, patience, and a lot of curiosity. And that, without a doubt, is worth it.

Moving to another country sounds exciting… and it is. As a Latina, I come from a warm, expressive, and spontaneous culture… and yes, also a bit louder. I knew Switzerland would be different, but I didn’t expect just how much.
These are some of the cultural differences that surprised me and eventually taught me something, too:
Punctuality is lawHere, everything runs like clockwork. If someone says 10:00, it’s exactly 10:00.
Public transport is no exception: trains and buses arrive and depart on the dot.
Silence is respected
From public transport to homes, quietness is part of life. After 10 p.m., even a balcony conversation can feel like too much.
Sunday = mandatory pause
Nothing opens that day. At first, it frustrated me. Now I enjoy it as a chance to rest or reconnect with nature.
Recycling is routine
Everything gets sorted: paper, cardboard, glass, cans… It was confusing at first, but now I value it as a daily way to care for the planet.
Multilingual conversations are common
German, French, English — sometimes all in one chat. It’s intimidating at first, but pushes you to learn.
Kindness is quiet
You don’t get many words, but plenty of gestures: they respect your space and help without noise. You just have to learn to notice it.
What I’ve learned…
Living in Switzerland is like being in a country where everything works perfectly… even if you’re not sure how to fit in at first. And while I miss the warmth and chaos of my Latin roots, I’ve come to appreciate this order with humor, patience, and curiosity. Because yes, sometimes it confuses me… but it also transforms me. And that, without a doubt, is worth it.
