Easy DIYs to Upgrade Secondhand Finds: The Front Room Makeover

Welcome to Part 3 of the Makeover Series — The Foyer / Front Room

Next up in the makeover series is a space that often gets overlooked. Our foyer is fairly large, and honestly, sometimes I wonder if it’s meant to be its own room. It’s the very first thing you see when you walk into the apartment, so I knew it deserved just as much attention as the other spaces.

The layout is a rectangular structure, with openings that lead into the rest of the house. It’s surprisingly well-ventilated, and one of the highlights of this space is the kitchen window that opens into it — letting in both light and connection between rooms.

Let’s get into how I approached styling and reworking this entry space to make it both practical and inviting.

Mood Board Time — Warming Up the Entryway

Since the foyer is the first thing you see when you walk through the door, I really wanted it to feel inviting — not just functional, but full of warmth and personality.

The space originally felt quite cold, mostly because of the white walls and tiled floors. So my main goal with the mood board was to soften the look and bring in some cozy, aesthetic elements to balance that out.

I leaned into warm tones, natural textures, and pieces that added subtle character — think soft lighting, wood accents, and maybe a mirror or two to open up the space even more.

A Room Full of Secondhand Stories

You won’t believe it, but every single piece of furniture in this room is secondhand — with one tiny exception: the books on my bookshelf (though, to be fair, a few of those are from Bücher-Brocky too!).

I’m honestly so proud of how this space came together. Nearly everything here is thrifted, secondhand, vintage, or passed down — and that’s what gives the room so much soul. This was by far the most fun I’ve had sourcing for any part of the house.

For this room, I didn’t overthink functionality or purpose. It all started with one beautiful secondhand sideboard I stumbled upon — and from there, everything else just clicked into place.

Most of these pieces were sourced from Ricardo, and here are some of my absolute favorites from this space…

A multipurpose cupboard with beautiful metallic accents.

A sideboard + accent mirror that really anchor the space.

Two identical photo frames I thrifted, now holding my own art.

Jharoka mirrors — my favorite pass-me-downs from India.

Wrapping Up – But Not Really the End

So far, I’ve taken you through almost all the important rooms in our new home — and what a journey it’s been! From painting walls to hunting for the perfect secondhand finds, this process has been as much about discovering my style as it has been about decorating a space.

Along the way, I also discovered just how much I love thrifting and exploring Brockis. The big question now is:
Do I stop thrifting now that the house is done?
Absolutely not. If anything, I’ve only just begun.

In fact, my final post in this series is going to be something a little different — and very special. I’ve collected thrifted pieces from my travels, each with a story and memory attached. I can’t wait to show you how I’ve brought those treasures into our home.

Because honestly? Thrifting is even more fun when you’re in a new place. Stay tuned — you don’t want to miss this one!

Eager to decorate without breaking the bank, I stumbled into the world of Brockenhäuser—Switzerland’s secondhand gems. What started as a hunt for affordable pieces quickly turned into a full-blown love affair with vintage finds. This blog series follows my journey through the world of Swiss thrift, one quirky bargain at a time.
