How To Make The Most With Your Small Space

Living in a small space doesn’t mean you have to compromise on your style and aesthetic. In fact, it can be one of those things where it adds an exciting challenge to turn a compact space into a beautiful and highly functional home that feels every bit of you and just as inviting as a bigger space. Whether it’s a small city studio, a cosy one-bedroom or just wanting to maximise what you have, thoughtful design choices can truly make a world of a difference. Today let’s dive into some smart tips for your style and small space that I myself have taken advantage of too. Let’s talk about choosing the right furniture/decor to leverage storage space solutions and still create a cosy atmosphere.

TL;DR – Key Tips for Maximising Your Small Space:

  • Space-Saving Furniture: Choose multi-functional pieces like expandable tables, sofa beds, and ottomans with storage to save room and maintain style.

  • Smart Storage Solutions: Make storage aesthetic by using baskets, built-in shelves, and tall furniture. Utilise vertical space to keep things organised and stylish.

  • Cosy, Functional Layout: Create zones for different activities, keep pathways clear, and use light, open furniture to make the space feel larger. Incorporate cosy textures for warmth.

  • Maximise Design Potential: Find furniture that’s practical yet stylish and don’t be afraid of bold statement pieces. Play with scale and textures to create depth.

Invest in Space-Saving Furniture and Multi-Purpose Decor

When every square foot counts, it is sooooo important to select pieces that do double (or even triple) duty. Try and look for furniture that’s specifically designed with versatility in mind, so… perhaps a sofa that transforms into a guest bed, coffee tables with compartments, extendable dining table, ottomans that open for storage or even beds with built-in storage space. Another great tactic is using wall-mounted or foldable furniture to free up some floor space. Furniture such as drop-leaf tables or floating desks keep things flexible and can still create that lighter, airier feeling. Multi-purpose decor can also be your best friend, such as a statement mirror, which not only enhances a room’s style but also bounces natural light around making your space feel much bigger.

Now… I live in a one bedroom flat with my partner and although the flat is spacious, it still needs its space saving hacks. One of my favourite ones that I have incorporated is an expandable dining table. When small, it fits 4 people but when extended, it can fit up to 8 people!! And because of this, I never have to compromise on hosting big fun events. I have also hung a giant mirror in the living room, not just to check on my outfits but also to give the feeling that the space is much bigger than it actually is.

Choose Storage Solutions That Are Aesthetic and Practical

In a small flat, everything has to earn its keep, including storage. Instead of hiding it away, why not make it part of your design? I’m thinking of beautiful woven baskets, sleek built-in shelves, vintage trunks or even a sleek bed with built-in storage (again), all which are as pleasing to the eye as they are functional.

Utilise on vertical space in a small space always!! This could mean that you can include tall bookcases (for the book lovers out there), ladder shelves, or cabinets that draw the eyes upwards which can also make the ceiling appear higher. There are so many options for maximising storage in a small space, you just have to define your style, check where you need more storage and go shop!

I have an open-plan wardrobe where you can see practically everything I own. Yes… you might be thinking, how on earth do I manage to keep that tidy and organised? Well firstly, I wanted a tall and wide wardrobe space that takes up an entire wall (utilising storage space here) and then I organise it with some pieces of clothing folded neatly and a lot of the rest in colour coordinated storage bins. It not only feels practical but also fits my style perfectly whilst maintaining storage space.

Create a Cosy Yet Functional Layout

In a small flat, the way you arrange your space can actually make a huge difference. Instead of pushing every piece up against walls, think about ‘zoning’ your space by creating clear areas for rounding, dining, working and sleeping (even if it’s all happening in the same space). Rugs, lighting and furniture placement can help visually define these areas without making your space feel box-y. It’s important to focus on keeping clear pathways between areas, not only for ease of movement but also to maintain an open breathable feel.

A quick little pro tip: this is also a simple trick borrowed from Feng Shui (check this out seriously, I recently started learning about this and there are some really cool tricks), keeping energy flowing smoothly makes a space feel bigger and calmer. How about that!

So, choosing furniture thats light on its feet, pieces with visible legs or open frames, as opposed to heavy, blocky designs, can make a world of a difference. Don’t shy away from playing with scale either. Sometimes, a single, bold statement piece can feel far more intentional than filling a room with lots of tiny items.

And… for some fun, bring lots of cosy textures like throws, cushy rugs or sheer curtains. Textures can help create depth and naturally adds warmth without crowding the room but still elevating the visual aesthetic.

Designing a small flat is all about being intentional with your choices while still staying true to your personal style. A little creativity, smart furniture and well thought-out storage can transform any given space into homes with full personalities and comfort.

I have incorporated a lot on space saving decor in my house, mixing pleasure with functionality. I am still learning and still trying to make my own space more storage friendly whilst staying true to my style.
