Living in Switzerland as a Latina: Building a Life Far From Home

Reading time: approx. 3–4 minutes

A warm welcome to you!

My name is Adriana, I come from Guayaquil, Ecuador — a coastal city full of rhythm, color, and warmth. I was raised in a culture where family means everything, where music plays in the background of everyday life, and where every meal feels like a celebration.

Ecuador is a small country, but incredibly rich in diversity. From the Andes mountains to the Amazon jungle, the Pacific coast and the Galápagos Islands, it holds so much beauty, tradition, and spirit. That identity is a big part of who I am, and no matter where I go, I carry it with me.

I’m a Latina student currently living in Switzerland, and this space is for anyone who has ever dreamed of taking a leap into something unknown, uncertain and profoundly transformative. This blog is not only about my life abroad, but also about opportunity.

It’s about growth, identity, challenges, and the choice to build a life beyond borders while staying rooted in who you are. When I decided to move to Switzerland to continue my studies, I didn’t have a perfect plan. I had questions, excitement, fears and a strong desire to discover who I could become as everything around me changed.

What I’ve learned so far is that living abroad isn’t just about the country you move to. It’s about how you carry your culture with you. It’s about learning to belong in a place that wasn’t made for you, while still finding beauty, meaning and strength in the process.

A life between two cultures 🇪🇨🇨🇭

Through my time studying in Luzern, I’ve learned to adapt to new rhythms: early mornings, quiet streets, public transportation and cold winters. But I’ve also discovered how powerful it is to bring my Latin American essence into these new spaces through warmth, resilience, curiosity and that joyful spark that’s so deeply rooted in my culture.

What I hope this space becomes 🌿
If you’re reading this and dreaming of studying abroad, moving to a new country, or simply discovering a different version of yourself, I hope this blog feels like a conversation with a friend.

A gentle reminder:

💛 You don’t need to have everything figured out to start something new.
💛 You just need courage, a little confidence, and a willingness to grow through each experience.

Living far from home has taught me that growth often comes from the most unexpected places. It’s not always easy, there are moments of doubt, of longing, and of discomfort but there’s also so much beauty in starting over, in adapting, and in discovering who you are away from everything familiar.

I hope this blog not only reflects my journey as a Latina in Switzerland but also inspires you to explore your own, wherever that may be. Whether you’re preparing for a move abroad, finding your voice in a new space, or simply learning to embrace change, you are not alone.

Thank you for reading! 🌸
For being here, and for walking a part of this path with me, this is only the beginning.
