Higher education in Switzerland: main peculiarities

Obtaining a degree from a Swiss university could open the door to successful professional immigration!

In my opinion, Switzerland is a perfect place for studying, and there are at least four reasons for that:

  1. High educational standards: Swiss education system combines best features of American, German and French schools. It’s strict, structured, well-organized but at the same time very practical-oriented and interactive.
  2. Prices: believe it or not, but Swiss education is one of the cheapest in Europe! The average cost of admission fee is about 100-600 Fr. The average tuition fee is between 500 and 2000 Fr. per semester (depending on the university). Moreover, most of the universities provide accommodation for students at reasonable prices.
  3. Job opportunities: wide range of internships for students.
  4. Great chance for improving your language skills: this country has three widely spoken official languages (French, German and Italian). That means that you will have the opportunity to experience a complete European atmosphere and culture in one relatively small country and enrich your language skills as well.

Before you start packing in your head I want to share with you some essential tips. First of all, you need to choose the university depending on your field of interest (or your professional sphere): there are three main types of universities in Switzerland:

  • University (UNIs) – more theoretical-oriented.
  • Universities of Applied Sciences and Arts (UASAs) – more practical-oriented.
  • Universities of Teacher Education (UTEs).

In addition to that, don’t forget to check the program details such as language of instruction (most of the universities provides courses in English as well), deadlines, requirements for acceptance (depending on the university), duration of study, ability to work during the studying, costs for admission and tuition fee, scholarships.

The application procedure is quite straightforward: 1 step – completion of an application form online via the university website (you can find the list of Swiss universities below), 2 step – the interview with the university’s representative. However, application procedure depends largely on the level of studying (Bachelor, Master and Doctorate).

Autumn semester usually starts in the middle of September and ends in the end of December, while the Spring semester starts in the middle of February and ends in the end of June.

If you’ve already applied and now waiting for the results – don’t forget to think about searching for accommodation in advance 🙂

In my opinion, getting a degree in a Swiss university could be a great start for your career!
