When Goalies Speak for Others

In today’s hockey sport you can see countless designs on goalie masks. But there are some that not only look beautiful, but also convey a strong message.

Each goalie mask is different, and each goalie has its own ideas about how it should look like. One tells a story with it, the other wears a design as a symbol and yet another simply shows his funny side. But this blog post is about those designs which convey a strong and emotional message. Those designs with which a goalie speaks for other people. Here are 3 such artworks which I personally think are incredibly powerful.

Louis Domingue, Tampa Bay Lightning (by David Leroux, Diel Airbrush)

Louis Domingue’s mask for the Hocke Fights Cancer night

The NHL and its partners have been fighting cancer since 1998. Throughout October and November, they raise awareness and funds for Cancer patients and their families with the fundraising campaign Hockey Fights Cancer. Louis Domingue’s Hockey Fights Cancer mask is a tribute to children fighting cancer – and it’s absolutely heartwarming. Not only the names, but also the drawings of patients from the Children’s Cancer Center of Tampa Bay are drawn on his mask. Domingue and the little artists of his mask explain the design in a short but sweet interview.

Dane Dow, Humboldt Broncos (by Morgen Schinnour, Schinny Designs)

Dane Dow’s mask pays tribute to bus crash victims

On April 6 2018, people all over the world were shocked by the news of a highway tragedy in Saskatchewan, Canada. A semi-trailer truck crashed into e touring coach carrying the junior ice hockey team Humboldt Broncos. Sixteen Broncos players, coaches and personnel died, thirteen other passengers got injured. One of the victims was goaltender Parker Tobin. The other goaltender, Jacob Wassermann, was paralyzed after the crash. After the team slowly rebuilt itself, new goalkeeper Dane Dow was acquired from the Drumheller Dragons. He wanted to honor the fallen members of his new team. His mask shows every victim’s name in a special paint that makes each name more noticeable depending which way he turns his head.

Henrik Lundqvist, New York Rangers (by David Gunnarsson, DaveArt)

Henrik Lundqvist’s mask honors Cass Marques, the equipment manager of the New York Rangers

This one is a classy act by the goalie legend Henrik Lundqvist. Each team consists not only of players, but also of personnel around the players. These people make sure that everything runs smoothly and that the players always have everything they need. They make sure that your equipment is always washed. They take care of the safety of your equipment. Because of them, all your stuff will be ready when you get into the locker room. In my opinion, they are the unsung heroes of every team. One of them is Cass Marques, the equipment manager of the New York Rangers. In 2017, Marques worked his 1’500th game with the Rangers – that’s more than 18 seasons! Lundqvist honored him with a mask specially designed for him and his 1’500th game. The mask was covered with the jersey numbers of some of the best Rangers Marques has worked with over all these years. Marques was also honored with a video and stick taps from the players during the first period of the game.

  1. Hey Pascal,
Voll cool dein Beitrag über die Helmdesigns. Ich fahre selber Motorrad und viel Fahrrad und schaue dort auch nach individuellen designs für meine Helme. Die Idee mit dem Airbrush finde ich mega. Weisst du was so etwas kostet?
    Gruss
    André
