Okay. Here we go. I’m Kim. And I am, somehow, a nerd. I love all those weird stuffs. Games. Anime. Manga. Drawing. But most of all: Fantasy.
Really. My mind is exploding sometimes with ideas. Like… Waking up in the morning after a creepy dream of a different world and such things.
But that aside. I’m not alone.
Some friends of mine got me into Dungeons and Dragons, I think, like a year ago. And since then I’m playing it sometimes and I love it. But I never had the time to get me deep into the material. And here we are.
What is Dungeons and Dragons?
Dungeons and Dragons is a tabletop roleplay fantasy game, where everything you need is a pen, a sheet of paper, some dices and your imagination. The so called Dungeon Master leads the game and the players through a world full of mysteries. He creates landscapes, cities, characters, quests and the dungeons, where you can find rare treasures and monsters.
The player creates himself a character that fits into the story. There you can choose between a bunch of races and classes and completely individualize it for yourself. But beware: You don’t just create a character, you also play it!
So, if you ever want to play a grumpy old man, how’s it with a dwarf barbarian, who lives deep in the mountains by himself to create his own weapon masterpiece. Or an elegant mysterious dark elf, cursed by a demon with loads of uncontrollable magic.
And with this character you start your journey. You will get hints and directions from the DM, the Dungeon Master, hold conversations with your companions and try to save the world. Or destroy. Depends on how you choose.
Because… There is no right or wrong. You decide what to do and when to do it. If the DM let you do it. Or the dices.
And there we get to the next point: Your equipment. With the sheet of paper and your pen, well, you write down all the information you need. And with your dices, you will role on different actions. Like in a fight, you will role your damage on the enemy or in some situations the dice will decide the details you get on various information’s.
With this it’s all you need for a quick start into the game.
Where to start?
For this project I want to start from the bottom and want me to work up until I’m done with a story, that I can play with my friends. And the best thing is: I won’t be just a player, I can be the Dungeon Master and can send them through my own world! I’m so excited for this!
In the future I will keep you informed about everything I’ve learned. From small details to big topics and funny discussions over crazy items. While it’s a long way to go until I will be finished with my own campaign, you will get a lot of insights into the campaign we’re playing now. I will introduce you to the different characters our group is made of and tell you something about the story or, and that’s the much cooler way, you just start to listen to it (That will be only in German. Sorry…).
But to begin with, I need the material to start with the game. And there is a lot of it. I’m pretty sure if you start the game you will be slightly confused over the mass of information, when you hold the Player’s Handbook for the first time. At least I was…
And where to get all the stuff? I mean. It’s great to hold books in your hands, but there is a really nice way of getting just the right information you need on DnD Beyond. If you don’t know the page yet and you want to start the game, just go and check it out.
There you can create your own campaign, design characters, get all the information over races, classes, items, monsters, spells, …
Well… It’s a lot.
I will start to plan my campaign there and keep you informed over the process.
How to get inspired
To get inspired I love to listen to some nice mystical or medieval music. Is it just me or do you also have the feeling like your walking through unknown places when this type of music plays? Sometimes I also just need to relax and just like in a dream, there is a new idea in my head.
Or I also love to listen to other D&D campaigns. It’s enjoyable and educational to hear other people playing. How they play, where they do mistakes, how the DM is leading the players through the story and the intense moments at fights or hard decisions!
At this point I can recommend you “Critical Role” on Youtube, if you don’t know it yet. I think, this group is one of the most famous ones. The story is great, the people are super funny, and it gives you chills to listen to them, cause they’re all professional voice actors. They know how to bring a character to live!
And one of the most inspiring thing for me is, to just talk with my friends. After a session, when the experience is fresh, my head is exploding with ideas and motivation to go on.
Well. This was a lot for now. Hope you’re not tired yet and as excited as I am!
I think for now we can let it be with:
You. Me. All the people that are playing with me. And the game.
So, let’s start!
And welcome to my adventure through the world of Dungeons and Dragons!
Hello fellow nerd. Awesome stuff! I recently started playing DnD myself, so I’m curious where this is going and shall be waiting for the invite to the OBM DnD group (:
Ohh, it’s awesome to see that there are more players!
An OBM DnD group would be super fun! 😀
