Western Women in the Emirates: Intercultural conduct

Women have been working hard to earn their respectful place in the western business world for decades.

Today, we are perceived as equal business partners and can discuss with our male counterparts on eye level. In Arab countries, we see a male majority in the business world. Female business partners are a rarity. The standing of businesswomen seems very difficult. What is the role of women in the Arab business world?

During the stay in Dubai, the female delegation of the CAS International Marketing and Communication, has considered the following points to avoid awkward moments while working in Dubai.

How do I greet someone?
A short handshake is okay if your business partner initiates it. However, physical contact between women and men should be avoided – you must keep a proper distance. Intensive eye contact is also not recommended. This may send an unintended signal.
A very appreciated gesture is to place your right hand on your chest over your heart.

What should I wear?
Wear a conservative and discrete outfit. Shoulders and knees must be covered.
As a female western visitor in Dubai, you must only cover your head for sightseeing in a mosque. If you would like to know more about the different head coverings, check out this link: from hijab to burqa.

How should I behave during a business meal?
It is advisable to refrain from alcoholic beverages. Forget your “diet requirements”. Try the local specialities, even if they don’t look very appetizing to you.
If the restaurant is very traditional, you probably have to eat with your hands. In this case, only use the right hand! The left hand is meant for other purposes.

Considering this advice, you shouldn’t experience major surprises.

While traveling for business, I remember the three key behaviors, Andreas Dudas showed us during his presentation in Switzerland:
1. be authentic
2. show empathy
3. listen to your intuition
